Do people only buy games for multiplayer anymore?

Okay, so I decided to host a ranked match for Gears of War last night, to see if I could get some practice in and maybe go for some of those related achievements (lol, "a series of tubes" guess someone at Epic is a YTMND fan :D ).

Anyways, while I didn't do too well, some people were wondering why I wasn't doing better. I remained honest and told 'em that I just don't really play the multiplayer of GoW much, because that's not what I bought the game for. And I could tell that in their voices, they were probably thinking I was some kind of weirdo.

I mean, seriously... does nobody ever bother to buy a game for a strong singleplayer anymore? Or is it just weird to them? I'm sorry, but if a game's singleplayer isn't compelling and worth playing, then I just don't give a **** if it happens to have the greatest multiplayer in the land. I don't buy games for multiplayer like that. And to be honest, only reason I even have XBL gold is because my brother bought me a prepaid card so we could co-op with each other. Deathmatching online just doesn't attract me nearly as much as being able to properly co-op with my friends and family.

So I mean, I have to wonder... has XBL become so much of a 'killer app', that people are basically just hopelessly addicted to the multiplayer aspect, and thus killing a lot of the quality SP games that we used to have? After all, what about those times you play a game and can't connect with your friends... if you just bought it for multiplayer, how are you supposed to enjoy the game then?

Maybe I am just rambling on, but for me, a game with a lousy SP/offline mode is just worthless, regardless of how good its multiplayer is. If I can't necessarily have fun with a game even when it's just on my lonesome, I'm much less interested in sharing the experience with someone else, familiar friend or complete stranger.

What's your take on it?

I had the same experience with R6 Vegas. I played through the single player multiple times when it first came out, then put it on a shelf for another new game at the time. I have only now gotten around to playing online in it, and most are even surprised to see me at such a low rank, then even if I only die once and kill someone with a higher rank than me multiple times, that one person that killed me once has the audacity to ridicule me as a noob... very irritating. In fact the only reason I have recently begun playing online is for achievements, especally in shooters. I would rather play the single player missions.

I buy games for SP usually. But Gears is more of an online game, no matter what Epic says. No one is going to lay down full price for a 10 hour game with no replay value, which Gears is. But the online, I've spend countless hours in. And co-op a good deal too (which is also online). So, they were probably thinking it's weird you bought a 10 hour SP game with countless hours of MP, for it's SP experience.

It certainly didn't take me 10 hours to go through the SP the first time around. And I actually did enjoy the singleplayer in Gears of War, particularly being able to go around and chainsawing locusts or popping their heads open. It also doesn't help matters any that I have yet to figure out how I can setup a multiplayer room so that I could at least run around the map and learn its layout before I try to go play against human opponents. Then again, a feature like that seems commonly missing from every console games' MP features. If anything MP-related that I could arguably say I bought the game for, was the co-op. Being able to team up with a buddy to lay waste to a tough boss is incredibly satisfying.

Pretty much strictly single-player here.  I don't even have Live!  So the only time I ever play multi-player is when friends are over.  So a good single-player mode is an absolute must in any games I play.

Yea it sounds like me and you have alot in common. I kick some major butt on single player but i get owned in Multi player.

Its a totally different animal, my teamates will have like 12-15 kills and ill have like 4-5.

But I love it all the same great game. and im an old school gamer so online multi player really isnt a selling feature for me at all.

I like a good balance of both, but single player games seem to suffer to make a better multiplayer experience.

I buy games for both, but I tend to focus on the Single Player part.

I'm more of a SP-kinda guy. I go online occassionally, but normally only if it's with a friend or a family member of mine.

You buy certain games for certain aspects. A game like Bioshock is single player only for a good reason, because even if it had online MP, I would never play it. A game like RB6 Vegas however, is built to be played online, and since buying I've played the single player for about an hour.
