I'm curious how many consider a game's score before they go make a purchase.  By score I mean the number Gamespot or IGN gives a game.

Also, what other websites have you found useful for giving games a score?

Yea, I should have added a sometimes... if I go and edit it, it says its collected votes and can only be removed now.  Regardless, the questions should get a general sense of people using game scores...

I always look at the score, but sometimes it doesn't sway my decision to buy.

depends, if I was always gonna get the game and it got something like a 6/10, I would be wary.

I use Gamespot's score when I'm just browsing and not looking for anything specific. Some games (like Gears, Oblivion and Mass Effect) I just buy without waiting for or looking at any scores.

Rather than look at the numbers I watch gameplay movies and read up on reviews. Developer interviews and Hands On videos always help as well.

There are some games that you just know are going to be good. For those games I just get them. For anything that might be questionable I either rent or borrow before I make a decision to buy. Reviews are just opinion, and some reviewers aren't nearly as qualified as they believe they are.

Of course. I need to know how good the game is before I'm interested in it...

There are some games I buy reguardless of score, though.

I read the review and look at the score because I don't rent games as much as I should to see if I like them enough to buy them. I have been disappointed only a couple time in the past.

It's sort of a 50/50 deal. If I have a game in mind before I go to EB, I will usually check the Gamespot score and read the customer reviews at EBgames.com , but I could be in the store, see a game that interests me a bit, not knowing the score, and pick it up. The last game I bought was Guilty Gear DS on a whim, and that was a wicked sinful whim. The game isn't terrible, but it is definately directed towards a certain crowd.....

Yeah I take them into account, but I don't use it as the end-all be-all. I think as the score titles say anything 7.0 and up is a good game. Won't buy any thing in the 4's or lower though...well accept for New Rally X.  Here is my stellar review.

Player reviews are a great source to use.  Although I always toss out the highest score and the lowest score.  You gotta watch out for fanboys and for haters.

It depends.  I usually only purchase games that got an average score of 8 or above, but I will buy some games before I even know what they got, like Gears of War and Halo 3.  I also have Mass Effect preordered, so I'm hoping it's good.  Usually though, a game has to impress someone else before I'll look into buying it.

I check the scores but the majority of the time i have already made my mind up if im going to buy that game anyway but if i think a game looks really good but it only gets a really low score then i will look into it a bit more to see if it is really worth buying.

The way this question is framed, the answer would be "No." I don't DEPEND on their score. I already know what games I'm interested in, and there are some I'll buy without reading reviews. For games that seem iffy to me, I'll generally look at the reviews to see if it's worth buying, worth a rent, or don't bother. GS reviews are informative, but the final call is mine. I've enjoyed several games GS thought were crap, and hated ones they've loved, so it always vaires.

I am not going to waste $60 so I usually check to see what the experts have to say; However, sometimes I do just go on instinct and pick up a title because I am interested

I don't look at the score but i read what the reviewer had to say about the game.  Mostly i rather play a demo before the actual game cause that gives me a better idea on whether or not i'll like the game.

Yeah, I check the score, but I'm more interested in the text of the review.  Scores are incredibly subjective as you really can't tell easily what the game is being compared to to determine its score.  The text of the review has much more information and the reviewers at GS and IGN do a pretty good job of giving good support for anything they say about the game.

well, i wouldnt trust editor's scores on here because theyre too jaded and cynical about games. like crackdown, that game was really fun, and they only gave it a 7.5. the users on this website usually can be trusted with reviews, just disregard the "OMFG this game is the pwnz00rs!" or the bad equivalent of something like that. alternatively, look at this or other websites that have rated games well that you like, and im not talking about halo or huge game franchises like that, those will obviously be rated highly across the board. look at the lesser known games that you have enjoyed and if the site matches your likings, then use it.

Certainly i do check what the game score is. I never buy a game because it has a shiny picture on the front cover. I also read what  other gamers think. The best thing is to check the demo if there is one.

I check with GameSpot every day for new content and video reviews (which have recently gone 'exclusive', damnit!), but I use a site like Game Rankings to get an idea of the general consensus about a game. For print publications, the only one I really trust anymore is "Edge", which is British and not cheap to subscribe to.

Not the score precisely, but I always watch the video review and read some reviews from different websites. The score goes into a secondary plain in my case.

I voted yes, but it doesn't influence my purchase.  If I see a review that is pretty bad and read on to find it has control, big framerate, gameplay issues and then find multiple reviews stating the same thing, if I really wanted to play it still I'd throw it in my gamefly que.  But I've bought my fair share of 6 scoring games, etc...  It usually only affects my purchase if it is drastically Red Steel bad from what was promised, because I look at it as 'I was promised this and this through the months, and the devs didn't deliver, therefore, I'm not buying the product because it wasn't what was initially being sold to me'.  That's a general thing for me though, not just with VG purchases.

I take reviews pretty serious.  It has to be a surefire title for me to pre-order such as Halo, GTA and things of that nature.

For the most part i have a game researched alot and i've been fallowing it before it is released so i don't look at a score in that sense but any other time i go by the meta score from all the sites to see how good a game is.

Ratings are good especially "user" ratings because you know they are truthful and not paid for comments.

Games that are the 1st of a series or 1st of its kind are good to see how others rate them.

Sequals like the "Grand Theft Auto" series are gimmies of expected value and quality.  You know they will impress as they have done so in versions before.

When X-men legends came out for the x-box I was leary because all of the X-men games before it were big dissapointments.  I checked the reviews on Gamespot and they were claiming it to be good!  So off I went with my cash in hand and bought it with high hopes based merely on 'user' ratings/reviews.  I loved the game by the way.

If I hear good things about it then I don't bother to check it out. When I actually check for scores it's usually because I'm looking for some games that I might have missed in the store. Sometimes the unknown ones are the best ones

Yes I check, however, it is not the final decision. I tend to judge on what my gut says, and if I am on the fence then I'll let the review tip me one way or another.

No, because some of my favorite games have gotten low scores but are really fun. The game's score is just someones opinion about it.
