no but you need a 360 to play on an hdtv. and the guy who said its a waste of a console is full of it. it looks a lot better on an hdtv but just fine on an sdtv if that's what you're used to.
You don't NEED an HDtv, but once you play on one going back to an SDtv will look like crap. It's like if you get used to using your PC at 1680x1050 and all of a sudden switch to 1024x768, it will look like crap to you.

I had one for a short time but I found dead pixels in 2 HDTVs over the course of one week! Needless to say, the games looked remarkable and I hope that one day I can get one that actually works correctly.
Oh, and no, you don't need a HDTV to appreciate 360 games, but composite cables make them look a bit better.
being that most games have txt and u cant read the txt on an sdtv i would say u need an hdtv...when i first got my 360 i couldnt stand not being able to read what was going on. i had to getta hdtv. plus i dont think a person with an sdtv appreciates the game as much as 1 with an hdtv. so to answer ur question u can play it without an hdtv but you will appreciate more with hd...but how couldnt you already know that?

You dont need an HDTV, but if you want to truly take advantage of your Xbox 360, then it's the only way to go. I dont agree with SDTV comments. HDTV compared to SDTV, HDTV is so much better. If I didnt have an HDTV or plan to buy one, I wouldnt get an Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii, until I did.
If your worried about it not looking good on your SDTV and you have an LCD monitor or something... you can always hook it up to that... thats what I do... I love it
To say that a 360 game is gonna look like an Xbox game without an HDTV is pure ignorance... the games will look fine on a regular tv... but for now the Lost Odyssey commercial is on so I gotta go!
i have a SDTV with composite hook ups...(red blue n green) i have an hdtv in my parents room i compared the two...not much of a difference of course HDTV looks better no doubt...especially since on my tv the left side is pretty cut off (example in mass effect...sheppards name only shows eppard...and forza 2 shows 0/30 races when it should say 30/30...) anyways...360 looks great on everythin but a tiny tv or black and white lol
