Do you prefer a game with a realistic approach, or a fantasy like game?

Hello fellow...um....forum readers. I have yet another question to ask you all. I hope this one does as good as the others! Do you prefer a much more realistic game (i.e: Call of Duty 4) or a fantasy like game: ( Bioshock) ? I prefer a hybrid of the two actually. What about...YOU?

For me, it's gotta be fantasy, or a hybrid of fantasy/realism. Life is alright, but it usually isn't that fun. Stuff that happens in games is fun and pretty friggin sweet. Okay, so there are some good moments in life, but it's usually like a once a year thing lol. I think it might be neat toplay a game where you play as a guy that plays a game, and it explores the gaming lifestyle from a unique perspective...that might be interesting?

That would be incredibly interesting. I've never thought of a game like that. Great idea man.

Fantasy games and graphics. I hate how 90% of games try to look super leet realistic, I love games that look unique like TF2.

Is "realistic" only modern-day or historical games, or does it encompassconceivable futures? What about near-future games like Deus Ex? What about far-future games like Mass Effect? Anyway, looking at some of my favorite games, none of them are set in the present-day real world. Most have some elements of fantasy to them.

I guess Fantasy, but I like realism... My favourite games are RPGS(Persona 3 and 4 being my favourite games of all time), so Fantasy is first.

I ONLY prefer fantasy games if it's done right like Bioshock, but I tend to fall on the more realistic game type than anything. But hey, MGS4 mixes both and does it well, also Gears of War in a sense.

I prefer realistic to a point and fantasy to fill the cracks. When a game is extremely realistic you tend to get very bland stories and at times NO immersion. No one plays a game just to play what they could do. Even Sports games have a layer of fantasy (Not like you are ever gonna run that 90 yard touchdown right?)

Oblivion, Fallout and Bioshock are decent examples of 'Reality meets Fantasy'. Throughout the game, even though they all use seperate time periods, you see very real things. Oblivions forests, Fallout's DC ruins, Bioshock's Ocean and architecture. They are real, allowinga player to have a little familiarity with them.

For example, In Bioshock:

"This is a sink". You look at the sink and it resembles your sink, although maybe a little cleaner/dirtier depending on your home. This makes you Ok with the sink. It isn't strange. You might even like the sink. When the sink suddenly spews water, and a monster rushes you, the fantasy kicks in, made all the more effecctive by the tiny shred of reality.

I love that in gameplay. If I can relate to a location or object in the environment it pulls me that much more int the game, giving the game that much more glue when it throws me for a loop. Enough glue and you find yourself stuck in your seat, taking in the fantasy and feeling maybe a bit of awe if it all went properly.

It is easy for a game like this to make mistakes. For instance, the unblinking, unthinking, stiff way the NPC in both Oblivion and Fallout3 makes it very hard to stay glued when they are around. Oblivion is much worse then Fallout3, but they both show severe symptoms of 'I'M AN OBVIOUS NPC'-osis.

That is just me though, when I see a game with this sort of thing it is going to be a hit with me at least. Everyone has their own standards.

I've been trying to think of how to express this for awhile now(before seeing this thread). I havent come up with one yet. Realistic aspects to a game can really add to the gameplay and make it something really fun to play. On the other hand if a game is designed all around realism it will more than likely suck. Examples of realistic aspects are stuff like kicking people in the balls in Saints Row which will result in them dropping whatever they had in their hands, The water in Saint's Row that has a slight rise and fall motion to it, Ammo counts, hit locations(bad guys react to being shot in the leg or arm), tread falling away from popped tires in GTA4. Some bad examples of realism is NFS: Pro Street where if you have dropped your car really low to the ground and you go over a bump it flips your car, or GTA4 and what they did to car handling. What Sqaure enix started to do with character designs starting with FF8.

I imagine each of us has our own personal favorite ratio of realism/fantasy. I guess that easiest way for me to describe my perfect ratio is that whenever realism interferes or limits my fun then it is to much. I play games to have crazy gun fights and crazy car chases and stuff. If I cant shoot my gun because it has degraded(far cry) or I cant go around a corner without totally losing control(gta4) then the game sucks and has went to far with its realism.

Realism that adds to my experience = good. Realism that limits or hinders my experience = bad. There.

Don't think you can really consider COD 'realistic', but I have to say enjoy more sci-fi games because they tend to have more depth and a better story, where games like COD don't really have a story.

OH! You were asking about the setting for the game and not the technical aspect?? In that case setting wise I dont have any preference. Modern, fasntasy, futuristic. I dont care where the story takes place as long as the game is fun to play.

I'm game for both. I can play a good fantasy game (like BioShock) as long as it's interesting and not corny, and a realistic shooter (Like COD4) as long as it isn't tedious. I think I'm more bent over to realistic, ballistic weapons over lasers anyday.

Are you referring to Arcade racers as "fantasy"? Because if there are literally fantasy-racers I'd like to try. :P

It depends on the genre of the game for me. Like in an RPG I much prefer a more fantasy based universe. In a shooting game I rather prefer a more realistic based universe.

I couldn't possibly agree anymore. Well said! There has to be ratio of realism/fantasy. There HAS to be some balance. Even if games take place in a fantasy setting, some element of realism must exist.
