So now that the DLC just came out, I decided to revisit the topic of the original game's very high score. I am wondering if you thought it did, and why. I believe it does not, and here is why:

The graphics (particularly the character models) are below par. They arent BAD, but compared to games like Fallout 3, they are way below the standard.

The missions are repetitive. There are only a handful of original missions (like the bank robbery for instance) and the rest are basically: car chase, foot chase, kill them.

The story takes FOREVER to get off the ground, and it doesnt exactly blast into hyperdrive later on

What do you guys think?

Can we please stop talking about this? This debate is getting very old and people just keep bringing it up and never getting a straight answer.

By the way, a 10 out of 10 does not mean perfect. It just means the game exceeded expectations and left a strong impression on you and managed to be very memorable. GTA IV did that for millions and then there are people who didn't like the game. Big deal, let it go already.

10/10 Perfect? No game deserves that score. 10/10 Amazing? Absolutely. I've probably put over 100 hours into it.

I havn't played GTA beyond the second one (yes, that long ago) it just doesn't interest me, but on the topic of ratings in general:

For me, rating anythign as a 10 (on the 1-10 scale) means it is the epitome of awesome in it's respective class, be it movies, games, books, whatever. It's a PERFECT score.
That being said, in my mind, a game rated that high does most everything right and other games should be compared to it. I don't think there is any game in existence that deserves a perfect score, and when I saw GTA IV rated that high on gamespot I was a tad disapointed.

no and this is getting boring everybody says it sucked and that it should have a 9 or 8.5 and so on..but who really cares? play the game and dont let yourself get influenced by stupid reviews make your own review after you played it, i gave it a 8.5/9, but then again..wtf.. good game overall but not fun enough and way too much similar missions

The 10 given to GTA IV from GameSpot did not mean perfect. It just meant it was an extremely good game.

The 10 given to GTA IV from GameSpot did not mean perfect. It just meant it was an extremely good game.

if a game is extremely good, it is given an 8. "extremely good" is also known as "great." if it is better than that, it is given a 9. if it is an absolute masterpiece it is given a ten. i think if gamespot still had their old rating system it would've been between 9.5 and a 10. maybe they thought it was better than a 9.5 so they just rounded it up. on IGN, a 10 doesn't mean technically perfect. it just means "masterful." something so well done that you can overlook its flaws. some people give mirror's edge a 10 because some of the game is so creatively beautiful that you can overlook its glaring flaws, or not even notice them. if GTAIV didn't appeal to you enough to love everything about it unconditionally...then you can give it a different score if you like...but the one reviewer assigned to the game happened to give it a ten. you'll notice on IGN, fallout 3 won game of the year even though it was reviewed with a 9.7. this is because the two games appealed in their own way to that ONE reviewer to give it a nudge in either direction, but overall, the whole IGN staff felt fallout 3 was a better game. you just have to stop seeing a score as an entire staff of expert gamers' final word...

No it does not deserve a 10. I feel that they gave it that just cause of the multiplayer which sucked you cant play that for more than 10 hours tops. when it comes to graphics their fine no complaints their not the best but graphics dont make the game. as long as their decent. the story was largly forgetable but alright. replayablity value was once or twice so kind of low but it's long so it evens out. the true fault of it is, how it has you learning all of this stuff and you only use it one, like picking up stuff to break window you only use it twice. and it takes half of the game to get throw it all! and all of the buildings, they should have a pourpose in stead of the 12 that mean any thing in the game. So over all no 10 and certanly not game of the year. I give it a 9.0 and thats all it really deserves. oh and imbecils 10 does mean perfect, and not your made up idea of what a 10 should be just to serve your own pourposes.

In my opinion, I think it did, some people expected too much from it, and of course it wasn't going to be such a thing. Grand Theft Auto IV reinvented gta in the best of ways, they managed to pull out an amazing game starting from scratch with a new engine.

game sites point out all the time that a 10 doesn't mean perfect... this is from hilary goldstein's review of GTA IV on ign... "A 10 doesn't mean a game is perfect -- it means a game is pushing boundaries, expanding a genre, and doing many things to a level so far above and beyond its competitors that they overshadows any flaws. Certainly, GTA IV has some issues, the most noticeable being the occasional flaw in the cover system, but there are many more pieces of GTA IV that are better than anything I've seen from a game in the past decade. We don't give 10s often -- just to games that merit the score."

No, the 360 VERSION of gta iv DOES NOT deserve a 10. Now if you asked me wether the PC and the PS3 versions do then Yes. I'm okay with the fact that games are released on multiple platforms after they've been exclusive to the legacy platforms, but Microsoft just found a new way to grab us all by the balls with this **** EXCLUSIVE DLC, >_

So, you're saying that both pc and ps3 ports of the game deserve a 10 because they don't have The Lost & Damned, or the exclusive DLC for the Xbox 360 and that Microsoft's port doesn't deserve a 10 because it does have them?

I think it does deserve a 10, i think the story is very gripping and gets you immersed, What do you mean 'compared to games like fallout 3'? It has better graphics than fallout IMO. - I think if not a 10 a 9.5, because MGS4 is a 10 and it's not on par with that. -Richie

I'm saying gta iv (without even saying it has exclusive dlc) deserves a 10 on any system but when a company (microsoft) has exclusive dlc for its system, well thats just a kick to the balls of those who don't have a 360. Imho, i think Rockstar is a sellout for what they did. Because of this I refuse to give GTA IV on the 360 a ten because of its exclusive dlc. Keep in mind I HAVE a 360 but i don't think its fair to all the other gamers. Especially the one's who play gta iv on a pc, GTA IV for the pc has a modding community and so many new things would have been possible with the new content added by the DLC.

I understand that it's unfair, but judging that they got paid in millions for making some DLC exclusive is a pretty big deal, I would do so, makes for more funds heading towards future projects, the studio and the personnel that works there.

not a 10.. it was a solid 9.0 imo... I just feel that the missions could've been more meaningful.. I actually got bored of the story mode and would only play multiplayer when it first came out.. I just can't stand doing those stupid nonsense missions... sometimes when i play the game it seems more of a chore than actual fun... oh and one other thing... if a 10/10 isn't perfect, than what would a perfect game be rated?? if it isn't perfect but close to it, i think it should receieve a 9.2-9.9, not a 10... I mean it is NOT LOGICAL to me to give a NON_PERFECT GAME A PERFECT SCORE.. but hey, that's just me..There will come a time someone will make a game like that.. I mean hell, imo Legend of Zelda: ocarina of time was a perfect game for it's time... I didn't see any major flaws and it introduced many new things to us gamers.. Now that was a 10/10!!

I find many scores from Gamespot to be bad. I haven't play GTA IV but I have played the one before it and if it's anything like that it definatley doesn't deserve a 9 let alone a 10.

no, i think that the game should have gotten a 8-9. i thought it should have gotten a 9 or around it. people didn't know how the game would have been because it was hyped peole were expecting a san andreas for the next gen. the reviewers just got in the hype of the game so gave it a big score.

No, it was the same 5 missions over and over again. First you would arrive at a target's house, announce to the target that you were going to kill him so he would run, then chase the guy. You repeated that like 100,000,000 times it that game.

The characters were also very bad. Most of the game seemed like an annoying cousin simulator sometimes.

maybe it deserved a 10/10 the first hour i played it but after that no, not even close to a 10 i say 8.5 or 8. like i said it was fun for a while but as soon as u play it for few hours it doesnt deserve that kinda score personally i think GTA SA deserved a better score then this game.

Hell NO!! Not only was the game not a 10, I think the game flat out sucked! As a long time GTA fan, I thought it brought the series backwards. San Andreas was WAY better...but Saints Row 1 & 2 stole the show.

grand theft auto IV plot was amazing, nothing compares to it, single player expierece would definatly be a 10, multiplayer eh 7 it was mediocre but if GTA IV alone the game would be a 10

Helllll no hah, but of course it was a very good game, prob the best of the games. It had a great free roam game, but what really got me mad was the online and how the game basically was boring to beat. I kept on trying to beat the game. but i would get bored within an hour. They need it to be more creative with the gaming experience. Overall it deserved an 8, minus the online and the creativness it deserved an 8.

A review is one person's opinion. That person is suppose to look at the game from a neutral and unbias standpoint; I personally think that somebody's pockets got lined for GTAIV to get a 10 out of 10.
