I think that after watching those six gameplay videos off of Live I would say that it definitely has the potential, and I would say that yes it does have a chance of being a better RPG then The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Don't get me wrong as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a great game and is one of the best games ever that I am totally addicted to like it was a drug as I just can't stop playing it. It really just comes down to what you like better either a medieval fantasy type of game or modern sci-fi possible chance of actually happening type of game.

So do you think that Fallout 3 has a chance of being a better RPG then The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?

i don't see how it couldnt be better? its made by the same people and its very similar so i'd be shocked if it wasn't AT LEAST as good, but i'm definitely expecting it to be better (i'll take guns and grenades over swords and bows any day too)

It's pretty much the same thing with guns, different environment and story.

Hell it even has the same 6 voice actors from Oblivion.

I expect Fallout 3 with be a lot like Oblivion. Hopefully, they'll fix some of that game's faults, which should result in a better overall product.

Lol, the only thing about Oblivion though was that it had practically 2 voice actors excluding Patrick Steward who had his few seconds to say a thing or two. Anyway, I don't think it will be as good as Oblivion. I don't even like Fallout 3, I just don't think it's interesting especially playing in an environment such as post-apocalyptic America. Oblivion gets a perfect from me, and I support it all the way. Fallout gets 0 from me.

I

know nothing about Fallout other then the 5 videos I just watched last night that are on the market place. I have played Oblivion and love it. It really looks like to me that Fallout 3 is Oblivion with guns and is set in a post apocalyptic future it's how I've been describing this game to people. Please correct me how I'm wrong if this is not what the game is.

To answer the question though I do think Fallout 3 will be a better RPG then Oblivion as when I was playing Oblivion I kept wishing this game had guns and was in the future :).

The one thing, the one thing I didn't like about Oblivion was the use of the same few voice actors over and over again. It really ruined the the suspension of disbelief for me. I really hoped that Bethesda would avoid this pitfall for Fallout 3.

I watched the videos, and what did I find? Bethesda have not only done it again, but they've used the same damned actors doing the same bloody voices! Arrrgh! I'm not going to be able to talk to some characters without thinking to myself, "Aren't you a wood elf, and haven't I bought some enchanted arrows from you at some point?"

Grr. I hope there are more actors than the ones we have seen in the gameplay videos so far.

wow... how bias was that? Don't you think you should give Fallout 3 a chance to, idk, come out before you jump straight to conclusions like that?

So Fallout 3= Oblivion with guns... Kind of. It's running off of a more advanced system that Oblivion had, but the gameplay is different, VATS for example, did we see that in Oblivion? NOPE! Decapitation, did we se that in Oblivion? NOPE! Perks, in Oblivion? NOPE! Now, I'm not making fun of Oblivion, it's one of my all time favorite games, but just giving it a perfect score? Uh it was far from perfect, there were glitches EVERYWHERE, there were literally like 6 voice actors, and the sound had a lot of delay sometimes. But other than that it was awesome, you could make any kind of guy you wanted, and it was completely open. A lot of freedom was given to you in that game. Now I'm guessing a lot of the same methods will be used in Fallout 3 (hopefully minus the negatives)

It definitely has the potential to be a better game, but I doubt I'll spend as much time on it as I did with Oblivion and definitely a lot less time than I did on Morrowind. Not to say Fallout 3 won't be good, but the combat system is a little less attractive to me than the Elder Scrolls games; seems like it would just slow everything down.

Not only do I think it has a chance to be better, I would go so far as to say it is HIGHLY LIKELY to be better. And this is coming from someone who has put hundreds of hours into Oblivion.

Oblivion is still my favorite game for the 360. It would take a lot for Fallout 3 to take Oblivion's title as my favorite 360 game. Of course, it wouldn't be bad if it did; I would love another great game to play.

The leveling system in Oblivion is terrible. It punishes you for leveling up by also leveling the creatures with you meaning you never gain an advantage over your enemies. Then the "Master" perks just completely noobify the game.

It doesn't take much insight to imagine that two games in the same genre from the same developer will probably be similar. And what do you mean by "Fallout has gone a long way since Fallout." Fallout 2 was very, very similar to the first game, which pleased virtually every fan of the series. Fallout 3 is likely going to be a major departure from the first two games, which is greatly upsetting to long-time fans of the series.

The one thing, the one thing I didn't like about Oblivion was the use of the same few voice actors over and over again. It really ruined the the suspension of disbelief for me. I really hoped that Bethesda would avoid this pitfall for Fallout 3.

grayoldwolf

No kidding. What was up with that? After playing a game like Mass Effect, with its hours of superb dialogue, Oblivion is positively nausiating. Why was it so hard for Bethesda to go find a bunch of voice actors? ****, just get some of the development team into a recording studio for the random NPCs.

I think it's an action/RPG hyrbrid. A key mechanism in Western RPGs is the fact that numbers define your character's ability in a game. You're beefy because you have a high STR and CON, and so on. The more you rely on a player's ability to circle strafe, the less stats like strength and dexterity matter, and the more it becomes an action game. A lot of recent RPGs have used stats to augment your player character's abilities, rather than completely define them, like in Oblivion and Mass Effect.

Yes undoubtedly, Bethesda have even said as much. They have taken all the best experiences and improved on them and improved things from feedback on things that didn't work as well. Mainly when you level up in oblivion all the enemies level up with you making it an exercise in futility, being that there is no real reward for experience and time placed upon your magic and combat skills.

Well it looks exciting...but im dissapointed with the short 20-30 hour main storyline...im buying the game still...

oblivion to me was the best game ever made...for me fallout can either be nearly as good or just as good...I have clocked 240hours altogeather in oblivion....thats the most iv ever done in any game...i hope fallout can do this for atleast 100 hours.I noticed alot of people happy about fallouts maximum level 20 limit;i like it but when i finished all the main quests in oblivion and most of the side quests i enjoyed leveling myself to maser on everthing...but in fallout that will take 3 diferent profiles...which has its ups and downsfallout looks great and i hope it can have a nice exploing part to it.I loved exploring caves etc in oblivion and i hope theirs abonded hospitals, buildings etc in this to explore.i cant wait for fallout 3 it has me more excited than gears of war 2!

even if fallout 3 has a short main story if they make it like the past fallout games, playing through with different styles of play should have you playing through it many many time. I am sure it will great and the next elder scrolls will be also... They make good games that is all there is to it. Fallout 3 will probably be better, but the next elder scrolls will hopefully be better than fallout 3

Since the games are different in most of the aspects of gameplay its hard to compare the two, however in my opinion I feel that the game has a really good chance of being better since they can take the feed back from the oblivion community and make sure that if there is anything that is similar meets in the middle with the complaints and raves.

This is very true..

I am going to say NO it is NOT going to be as good as oblivion...for the simple fact that its very similar, and two years later. This is not going to be the same experience for us who already have played through oblivion

I will say this. One of the lead designers of Fallout 3 is the same guy responsible for the Dark Brotherhood questline. That piece of info combined with what we've seen in the 5 video demos they've released has me so pumped for this game. The main questline may only be 20-30 hours but they've gone on record to say theres at least 100 hours of gameplay total.

we shouldnt worry about length, 20-30 hours for the main quest is twice has long as oblivion's main quest. I can see several long play-throughs wit hthis game. and aswell am looking more forward to this then GOW2, that said, all of my must have games this season are all multi-plat. Gears 2 and Fable 2 look good but stuff like Fallout 3, TFU, Far Cry 2, all look alot better IMO.

Oblivion was a great game in my eyes, I mean ya it wasnt as amazing as Morrowind but the graphics and battle system was a welcomed addition. I hope that Fallout 3 will combine both games and make an UBER ULTIMATE NEW BETHESDA MASTERPIECE!

Agreed with all those comments about the voice acting in Oblivion. It made me want to cry cause I talked to different people with the same voice. I was in Voice acting hell for over 80 hours.

I do believe that FallOut 3 has more potential to be a way better RPG then Oblivion but dont get me wrong Oblivion kicked ass. I spent over 75 hours making the most powerful person with all my attributes to 100. But FallOut 3 made it so you can only level up to level 20 which makes you really have to decide what your perks and everything is going to be.

Why do people compare Fallout 3 with Oblivion? Well aside from the obvious (which you pointed out) both games are made by Bethesda. So far all Bethesda is known for is the Elder Scrolls series. A series of games where the game play hasnt really varied from one game to the next. From the sounds of it Fallout 3 is following the same basic pattern. However there will be things in Fallout that will not be seen in TES which I think is a step in the right direction. When it comes down to it, this is a make or break game for Bethesda, because they are technically still a unproven gaming company in the world of RPG games.

Now before I get rabid fanboys all over me, let me explain. As I previously stated, all Bethesda is known for is TES. Most of the people that have played more than just Oblivion all agree that it was a crap game or that it just didnt live up to the potential of Morrowind. In anycase, Bethesda cant really be known as a good RPG producing company if they only stick to a single series of games and even then just keep following the same basic pattern over and over. So if Bethesda actually does a good job on this game (right now its looking 50/50) then itll drawn more attention to themselves by telling other companies that "Hey Bioware isnt the only company that can shell out a really good console RPG".

pfft not when it comes to "useful items", places worth exploring, sure oblivion was massive and each dungeon was dif. but it didnt have anything worth exploring besides a good look at the architecture (most of the time). overall story...the only thing morrowind doesnt have that oblivion has is graphics and physics and thats a given because its on a nex gen console (imho)...

I don't think so, from the previews of fallout y get the idea it won't be a breakthrough either in RPG or shooting games but a bit of both worlds, and I don't think it'l have all the side-quest potential, and the stunningenviorments of the TES series.

If it ends up being just as good as Oblivion I'll still be dazzled. Yet, I figure Bethseda has learned from Oblivion and is prone to fixing some of the minor errors.

Either way this is shaping up to be one ambitious title.

It's pretty much the same thing with guns, different environment and story.

Hell it even has the same 6 voice actors from Oblivion.

No its really not the same thing with guns, watch more vid's, read more interviews, go to the website and read!!!

But idk, i hope its better then Oblivion considering it is one of my favorite 360 games.
