do you think the Mass Effect combat system is clunky?

I love the game, but the combat system is really hard to get used to, and it just feels a bit clunky and overly complicated. What do you think?

I played for the first time tonight and I agree. It is taking a long time to learn and not only that but the pop up hints don't help much.

No. I really enjoyed it and found it quite seemless after a half an hour.

I wouldn't say clunky, but I would say it had a steep learning curve (took me like 2 hours of game time to get used to it) After a while I started to love the combat system though.

I like the combat system and I like how the AIs run around and get in your face.

For an RPG it is a good combat system, for an FPS, yes it would be clunky, but then Mass Effect isn't an FPS. The way the action stops when you are picking abilities is classic turn based RPG, the fact that you can target those abilities and also shoot in a classic FPS way add a lot to the game IMO.

I thought it was clunky at first but once I got used to itI felt it was well thought out and really intuitive. You have to remember, as another poster said, that you are playing a RPG and not an FPS. Once you get in that frame of mind it will seem a lot easier to manage. The way it pauses the game while you choose weapons or abilities is great too and gives you time to think, plan, and choose what you want. Making the right choices in situations with a lot of baddies can make all of the difference.

You can also set your squad's biotics and abilities to 'active' or 'defense only' in the game options menu. You might look into this while you are getting the hang of it.

Just give it some time. It didn't help that there was no tutorial.

I thought it was great. Really cool combat system. The only thing that bugged me was when one of your teammates is blocked or cant get a shot. The problemwas mroe in the squad ai then the combat system though... I want my squad member to use carnage and I couldnt use it 70% of the time because i didnt have a shot. The way the game was implemented is perfect imo. It was just glitchy and rushed out the door in a lot of ways.

Along the lines of others, I was really confused at first (coming from KOTOR I & II) but once I finished Eden Prime I felt like I had a decent handle on things. Now it feels second nature :)

The combat is fine its a third person shooter with "magic" whats not to understand? Only thing about combat that feels clunky is the sniper rifle, I don't see why BioWare could think that gun could be used full time and have Sheppard shake like a crack addict with withdrawl when he pulls the gun up so you constantly miss.
