I used to enjoy building up a nice collection of games, but lately I've been wanting to trade them in (Especially the ones I've beaten and haven't played in months) for something new. But here's the thing. Everytime I've gotten them all together to do so I feel like I will regret it and end up NOT trading them in. It's actually quite hard for me to make a decision on what to do so I thought I'd see what some of my fellow gamers do.

Do you build up a game collection even if it has games you've only played once?

or

Do you play them and trade them in towards something new?

I will usually keep a game Ive beaten if I really enjoyed it. If it's a game I can never see myself playing again I will most likely trade it.

i want a good collection of games rather than 2 games sitting there but i think whats the point keeping it say e.g. i want call of juarez and i have ghost recon which i dont tend to play with anymore and maby 1 or two other gamesi would trade ghost reconand the other games in for COJ so i would get money off but it would lower my collection. So basicly i want a big collection but...Im alwasy trading in games i dont play anymore lowering my collection.

sorry if you didnt understand whenI say trade im talking bout means trading in the game to get points for money off or money of a game or whatever in store this is GAME store im talking im in UK btw so it might be different in USA or where ever.

I used to trade my games in all the time but with the 360 I like having a nice sized collection. I have Bioshock, Dead rising, Smackdown vs Raw 07, Oblivion and even Halo 3 that just sit there and I RARELY play them especially with Guitar Hero III, Mass Effect, Smackdown vs Raw 08, and Call of Duty 4 coming out I REALLY own't be playing them. A few times I gathered up my games and said I wanna see how much I'll get for these but then feel REALLY guilty and end up putting them back on the shelf. I actually DID trade in Rainbow Six Vegas and The Darkness to get my Nintendo Wii and I feel guilty about it still, eventho I like the Wii more. I know it sounds weird. :l

That's amazing. Looks like an EB Games lol. So even if you don't play most of those games anymore you still keep em?

Part of me wants to trade them in towards a PS3 or some other games.

What should I do?

I can't seem to justify spending 60 on a game and then getting 15 for it 2 months later.. Everytime I try to I end up keeping it because I feel insulted from what they offer in return. Most of the times I ask how much the buy it back for and then how much they re-sell it for. That just pisses me off.

I am a collector and a gamer. I have a few games I've never played due to time contraints and dedicating my spare time to other games. It sucks, but it's nice to have them for when I finally get time to play them. The big problem is that games come out faster then I can play through them.

I've never NEVER taken a game to an EB and traded it in. I tried once and they offered me like $3 for a game they were selling used for $25 or so. I got a good laugh out of that and never bothered again. Ebay is the best way to unload old stuff, and a great way to aquire rare games too :)

I think I would flip out if I wanted to play an old game and it wasn't right there for me to grab it. Which is why I keep them. They can be really hard to let go of.

It seems most people keep there's and I see why, but for me having a game sit there not beingp layed is also a waste of money. Seriously I haven't even TOUCHEd Dead Rising since I beat it last year.

I keep my games. I usually always go back to them..... kinda of like today, I was playing my Darkwing Duck and Thrilla's Safari for the NES. You never know when you might want to play a certain game. Even the bad one's usually have something to offer that warrant's keeping them.

I only trade in games when it is for a new system, I traded in many of my Xbox games when I was purchasing my 360 (just because many of the games I do not play anymoreor they were not backwards compatable even though I kepy my original Xbox)I never trade in current system games for newer games. If you look at my game collection I own too many 360 games and just a handfull of Wii games. I do however keep the classics for my Xbox and Cube (Halo, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, and the Marios, Metroid, and Resident Evils)

The funny thing is I trade in some of my older generation games but still keep the systems. I still have the Cube in the bedroom so my wife and I can have competition in Mario Kart while the Wii and 360 are downstairs.

So I guess to answer your question I am a game collector but only of current gen consoles. Past consoles get traded in or sold on ebay to provide room for new games.

i definately do but only towards special releases because gamestop gives you special offers like if you trade the games in towards the reserve or purchase you get 30% extra credit...like i mean why have a big game collection just for show? if you don't play it get some money off it...nobody can expect to get 60 back for the game...and if you have a card for gamestop you get 10% extra credit...I mean they rip you off but they give you opportunities to get alot of money off your games if you wait for the offers to come...

Agreed on the "never have, never will." They give you peanuts for trade-ins, but then turn around and try to sell it for like only $5 cheaper than a new one. Not worth the money you get, and I'd rather spring for the extra $5 for a new game.

Normally I don't trade in games, I like to have a collection. But yesterday I traded in five games I know I was totally finished with so I could get PGR4 (PGR 3was one of them). I don't and won't miss them, but the return on trading them in is so low I doubt I will do it again. I was strapped for cash and couldn't wait until pay day. I'm glad I did it but 5 games for 28 dollars-ouch.

I usually feel the same way as you TC. But the majority of the time it's just not worth it. Usually it takes 3-5 games that you trade in just to get a new one, which doesn't seem right.

If you are gonna get rid of a game you dont play anymore, youre best bet is to sell it on ebay for about 3x as much as they will give you at gamestop.

I remember a website that was around back in the dreamcast days that actually let you trade games for games. You would make a list of games you had and were willing to trade along with a list of games you wanted and the system would help you find other people to trade with. It had a feedback system to keep people honest and worked really well. I prolly traded about 6 games for other games with no complaints. Dont remember the name of it anymore, but Im pretty sure its gone now. Anyone else know what Im talking about?

I'm a game collector so i don't really trade in games, but part of the reason I don't trade in games is because I'm very selective about which games I purchase and add to my collection. For the rest of the games that don't quite meet my collection standards I use Gamefly.

And as for the people complaining about the amounts you get on trade-ins you have to look at the big picture for the companies. On average retailers make about a 20% profit on a new game. If you expect them to settle for a smaller profit on a used game then you're not facing reality. A company has to maintain it's profit margin if it wants to stay in business and since used games are a big part of retailers like Gamestop they can't afford to cut there profit much.

I don't like the fact that trading in a game a week after it's release only nets you $35-$45, but that's how the business works.

I don't trade in, cause you normally get absolutely gipped on the prices. So I sell my stuff on Amazon, and make a good buck.

Where are you trading in games Xadies? 20% markup? Everywhere Ive traded in games they resell the game for at least twice as much as they paid me, if not more. You're right that retailers only make about 20% on new games, but they make a killing on used games. They sell a used game for 10 bucks less than it costs new, even though they only paid you a fraction of the retail value. A $60 game traded in for $15 is sold for $50. Thats a profit of $35, more than twice the original investment. If they bought a used game for $40 and then charged $48, that would be a 20% markup.

Amazon or ebay is definately the way to go with used stuff.

I only trade games in after I have built a huge collection and its time to get another next gen system. Thats exactly what I did with my xbox games I had somewhere around 60-70 games and traded that along with my system and didnt spend a dime on my new 360 or the few games I bought with it from the left over credit. Its was a good deal since at the time I didnt have the cash to buy a 360 but I didnt miss any of the games I traded because I only traded the ones I didnt really care about and the ones I still cared about even though I didnt play them I kept. So now Im slowly building a huge collection for my 360 until its time again to trade in for a newer system. I didnt use my ps2 towards the purchase of a PS3 because; well one no cash and two I didnt have enough games for the ps2 to really make up the price of the $600 launch PS3. Probably will own a PS3 someday not too sure about a Wii maybe if I get a gf I'll buy one.

On the other hand, I do regret that I had traded about 3 games so far and that was a mistake that I wont make again. I still have no idea what game I traded the other two games for, but I wont trade again until its time to get another next gen system and they have specials that make the trade ins a little better.

I have NEVER traded in games and don't plan to start now. I have all my games since the SNES era although like half of my PS1 and Dreamcast games dissapeared over a period of time, I was young and reckless. Still I have games for the SNES, Genesis, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, Xbox360 and a mix of GB, GB Color and GB Advance games.
