for example.

I'll look up all the achievements in the game that's possible, narrow down how many of those I think I could actually unlock myself, and make it a rule to not buy another game, or sell a game, until I've unlocked those achievements.

Some achievements I won't count toward my "necessary" achievements, like GoW (frag 50,000), or Dead Rising (Saint acheivement-rescue everyone in the mall), but I do check off a decent amount and ones that are challenging but within my grasp as a casual gamer.

I find myself playing a game JUST TO GET the achievement, not actually having fun with it anymore (ahem Lost Planet).  Achievement Points are a great way to measure how much you want to accomplish in the game, replayability, and challening the player to do some of these tasks that would otherwise be unrewarding without the achievement point system.  AP's are good, don't get me wrong!  (When I save every survivor in Dead Rising I want mofo's TO KNOW ABOUT IT!).  But sometimes I only play the game to unlock the achievement, so I can feel that I got something out of it even though I don't really want to play it anymore.

Does anyone else have this "system"?  And do you think it's a good thing?

Thoughts?

I do this a lot of the time, I doubt that I would of ever played Gears' single player so many times if there weren't achievements for it.

I think once you get all the achievement points, you've basicly done everything the game has to offer.

Nope. I buy the games when I have enough money regardless of my achievement score.

I play games for fun. Crazy concept eh? I very rarely work towards achievements unless they add to the fun factor of the game in question. I own 25 games and only have 10k achievement points.

As for are achievements a good thing, I'm not quite sure. I think I preferred wjen people played games to have fun rather than to get some poitnless points which mean nothing. I know I feel a lot better winning a 64 player game of BF 2142 than I do unlocking some achievement.

Imagine they awarded you 100 points for winning that 64 player game, and on top gave you a cool special picture for your "achievement"...

IMO, that's what they're trying to do, looking what players like in a game (or might like), and awarding them when they accomplish it.

Sometimes. It really depends on the achievements and how fun the game is. The achievements that resemble chores more than enjoyable tasks I skip more often than not.

no.  achievment points are a marketing ploy.  i wont play a sucky game just because it has points i have,  and i wont quit playing a game i have fun with just because i have all the points.  i play games,  i dont work them.  if it's work i should be getting paid to play,  not paying to play.  when i'm not having fun tells me when it's game over.

Nope, I buy games no mattter how many points I've gotten. Lately I've been buying new games even though I haven't played the last 5 games I've bought. I'm always buying games.

I stop playing when the game ceases to be fun. Maybe this is once I complete the main story, or maybe before then (I've always loved the Splinter Cell series, but I couldn't get into DA and traded it in after about 4 missions completed). Achievements alone do not push me to play a game I'm no longer enjoying, but I love finding that I have accomplished an achievement while playing.

Sometimes I do. Like, Just Cause, I thought the game was alright but a bit too short so I played to get the achievements whereas with others, like Oblivion, I play to have fun and the achievements just add to the experience.
