So, I bought Dead or Alive 4 because I loved the other DOA games, and I assumed that it would be like the other games, and it is, except for the fact that it is insanely hard right out of the box.

I mean, i'm not even having fun. God forbid I haven't played a DOA game for awhile and am not a master as soon as I pop that baby in. Even on the lowest difficulty it destroys me. I've managed to get through story mode with a few characters, but that's with using lots of continues and playing several rounds at least 5 times. Some as high as 10+.

So, I think i'm going to trade it in, and it breaks my heart, because I LOVED the older DOA games, but this one is just too hard right off the bat, and it's cheap hard, with no way of ramping up your skills, nowhere to start from square one, you have to start from hard (normal on DOA4 is harder than normal on past DOA's).

So, yeah, I'm thinking of maybe picking up oblivion in it's stead.

It's really tough, sometimes in realy cheap ways.  I'm not great at fighting games in general but I worked and got through the campaign with all the characters (I think).  The time trials destroyed me though...  I kept it for a while, once you get the counters things get a tiny bit easier...   But its up to you.

I thank Itagaki and his thought that gamers are whiny pansy girly men who like everything easy. SCREW EASY MODE! I love how if you do easy mode in Ninja Gaiden black the game seriously babys your way through and constnatly makes fun of you.

Though getting oblivion over DOA4 isn't a bad thing, you should give it more of a chance.  DOA4 is harder then most fighting games on its normal setting, but its still forgiving in its own right.  For story mode you only have to defeat each character once, and you have unlimited continues.  Pick a character you like, preferably a ninja since they seem to be very well rounded, and run through the training mode to at least see all of their moves.  You'll find a couple simple moves that you can mix up that will help you beat the computer.  Most characters seem to have a dash attack of some kind, which at least gets your enemy off of you for a second.  Don't spam moves too often, otherwise they will get countered more frequently it seems.. and practice your counters.  I found that after practicing alot with one character, i got a feel for how the game worked and was significantly better with all other characters.

I personally love the game, i've beaten all story modes, time trials and reached 49 kills in single survival with kasumi.  I'm still pretty new to it, and it has caused me to swear to no end.. but it gives a great sense of accomplishment.

She definitly can be annoying, especially when she gets you in a grab and takes away almost your entire health bar!  I found the easiest thing to do was spam a charge attack.  Though, some characters have limited range in their charge, which made it harder to do.

so you expect to kick complete ass "out of the box".. what? if you did not need to practice the game would be s***. thats the essence of DoA.

You have poor willpower if you cant even play it untill you beat the storymodes without dying

Yeah, I found mashing the punch button helps.

To the TC, the game is horribly difficult. Sadistically so, really. Just get as far as you'd like (if you're into the achievement thing) and then go with the online play. The people online aren't as good as the CPU most of the time, lol. You're not imagining it though, the game is really hard and caused one of my 360 controllers to get damaged. :P

yeah, i don't think that i said that i expected to "kick complete ass out of the box" and i never said that i didn't want to practice.  i like how you put words in my mouth and ran with it.

and i have nothing against hard games, at all.  i like hard games, but it's poor design to have a game that hard right away, with no way of teaching new players how to play, or having a mode where you can putt around and learn some stuff, instead of fighting a character who either doesn't move or kicks your face off.

there is a training mode, thats how most fighting games are, they have training modes. even mortal kombat has conquest mode which is just you training as other chracters. its the same here and yeah the game is hard but they made it that way for a reason and want you actually work for ur achievements.
