I was thinking, if GTA didn't have multiplayer, would it have gotten a ten?

All most all of the top played and rated games have online multiplayer. The only game that doesn't fit into that category is Bioshock. How much does online multiplayer add to a game and is it necessary for a game to have it for you to buy it?

I truly doubt it would have gotten a ten probably 9.0-9.5 they'd complain that it's the same thing with very few changes more than likely. Anyway a great game doesn't need multiplayer although from the looks of things even rpg's are going to eventually "need" online co-op. I think it would be cool but not all games need online. Some people only buy games with online but not me my faviorite game on the Xbox 360 is LO no online.

I think it should have to to get a good review score. I think COD4 deserves a 10 just because of its multiplayer game. I think GTAIV deserves a lower score because of the lack of the greatness of its multiplayer.

Some games rely heavily on the online component to sell. A game like Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 wouldn't have done as well as they did if the online wasn't there. A game like Bioshock just appeals to a lot of people because of the level of innovation that it was able to accomplish to get the job done. As long as a game has either an indepth storyline or a deep online that's all it needs to be successful.

Bioshock is a 10.

It's one of the only games that should have the ten. Online wasn't necesarry. It was a great story, great gameplay, amazing graphics, and superb atmosphere. Games that just tack on a multiplayer just to have it should lose points. I like GTA 4, but most of the online just feels kind of useless. (Though turf war is fun) Saint's Row could've went without the online simply because it was laggy and useless.

So in conclusion, no. Games do not need online multiplayer to be great.

depends on the game, but for the most part I'd want a very strong single player component and if it's entirely worthy of a multiplayer mode, then it should be good as well.

No but it helps a lot for the games reviews and sales. I think COD4 is a perfect example of this. While the campaign was far from bad, the multiplayer is the reason for this games sales.

No, Bioshock clearly proves that a game does not need online multiplayer to be a great game.

we're still at a relatively early stage of online (console) gaming, so the future is definitely bright. personally i would love to see an adventure game which can only be played with 2 players i.e. having to help each other over obstacles etc etc. hopefully one day....

For this day and age a great multiplayer isnt necceary for a great game to be made but, it realy helps since there is only 2 great games i can name that dont have a multiplayer( Bioshock, Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion ). I would say almost every great game since the arrival of the xbox and Halo has had a good online to go with its "subpar" single player. Or atleast for the games that most people play.

cod4 multiplayer sucked.

and to the point, no, online doesnt make a game. online games are fun, but i prefer the story and atmosphere of the singler player part of games.

For me, a great game needs to have exceptional multiplayer and doesn't need anything else.

you guys are just arguing the definition of a "great" game. that's pointless.

Even so I think it's not really necessary, it's actually becoming a standard in most games. And I think it mostly has to do with community. Having a multiplayer side of a game brings fans of the game together. I mean multiplayer is pretty much the same as having a buddy over the house.

Back in the day there were arcades where people can compete or play together. Well online has now replaced that. Granted Bioshock and Oblivion didn't need multiplayer to make them outstanding games. But how fun would it have been? Can you imagine how Bioshock would have been with all those different weapons and powers at you disposal.

I think in the future there will be less and less games without an online feature.

Yeah what your saying is pointless, Bioshock, Assasins Creed and the single player for GTAIV is clearly Proof that games dont need multiplayer. Its a shame that games get rated extra score purely for having a multiplayer mode

no, i think games should have multiplayer but is not needed to be a good game. i think single palyer needs to be longer now in days.
