Let me sum it up

1080p is the best of all HD settings and will always be for at least a few years

Get the elite

If you don't, your a commi :)

HDMI is a digital connection while component is analog.  720p will still be 720p.  I wouldn't spend $480 on a new 360 for HDMI, when I already have one that works.  The only advantage will be that standard DVD's will be upconverted to 720p over HDMI while they can't over component.

Digital streaming usually give you a better picture than analog. Look at those DVI LCD screens, they are more vivid than those still running on VGA. gnutux

If that is the case then you are either NOT getting an HD signal or you are blind.

Yes and no.  It all depends on the source.  A digital connection is error-free, but the picture quality is determined by the source and the tv/monitor.  And it just depends on the application. link  Some source and TV's look better with component and some look better using HDMI

But HDMI vs component for a 360 is not worth $480.  Now if someone doesn't have a 360 it is a no-brainer, but not if you have one already.

If it does it's probably not much. It seems to be mainly a covenience. Only 1 cable for video and sound, and upscaling dvds.  If you don't own a 360 I say just get the elite and HDMI since it's there.

There is very little difference in HDMI vs Component,,

basically what happens is your 360 outputs a digital signal,, in order for it to go thru a component cable is must convert the signal into an analog signal,, then when your tv gets the signal your tv must convert it back into digital,, the conversion proccess causes some loss of information, but nothing you would notice, the tv's video proccessor fills in any gaps using interpolation, which may cause artifacts,,

An HDMI cable is digital so there is no conversion,, thus no loss from that,, technically you will always get some loss when running anything over a cable,, cables can "leak"

like previous posters have said,, its not worth the price of the Elite if you already own a 360,, you wont even notice a diff.

HDMI can carry the same signal as Component and vice-versa...but the only thing is HDMI carries digital signal through 1 wire and component carries it through 3 (plus the 2 for sound)....it would be bad to compare it to DVI and VGA a more plausible comparison would be HDMI and Composite....other than that there wont be any difference in quality between 1080p hdmi and component

Question, if I sell my xbox to a friend for 150... and sell a few games... and make the price of an elite go down to 100... would it be worth HDMI to use on my 720p tv? I have the same problem... i want the best in quality but idk if its worth 100. is it?

i might get a 1080p tv by selling my 720p to a friend and using the money for a new one...

Funny thing about ur reply is that 720p and 1080i are the same thing...... And idk about on a 720p/1080i tv but in my 1080p the hdmi made a noticable difference for me.. the colors are more vivid and the details on some of the stuff is more detailed. Overall not worth buying a new 360 for though

most games are made in 720 but also have the ability to be displayed in 1080p and even if the game is only 720p comtaible the display is still somehwat better when played on a 1080p more vivid colors and slightle more detail overall

Most games native resolutions are 720p, but they can be upscaled 1080p. Very few games this generation of consoles are true 1080p (Beautiful Katamari is the only example that comes to mind right now). But the upscaling does make a difference in video (the colors are much cleaner, brighter, and crisper) and the audio is very much upgraded by switching to HDMI (you can even tell the difference on the tv's onboard speakers).

HDMI does look better because the signal is digital instead of analog. Digital being better because there's no data loss so you get better colors and all that jazz buts its not something that i would buy a whole new xbox for. A better solution is to get a VGA cable if your setup can support it. VGA also puts out a better picture than component and quite close to HDMI in terms of quality imo.

Yes it does make the picture better.

a cheap brand HD tv wont look as good as a high quality brand tv.

I have a panasonic720p 42" plasma, and i can tell a nice difference between the component cables and the HDMI cable.

Pretty much this.

The best tv for console gaming right now is 720p. Anything higher results in either the tv or the xbox upscaling, and both lead to quality loss (much less so when the xbox does the scaling). The difference between hdmi and component is very small. If you can hear a difference between analog and digital stereo from your TV's speakers, it's your TV's fault.

Don't bother blowing a few hundred just for a negligable difference. If you get a new TV, do it for blu ray. If you buy a slim, do it because your old 360 died.

i know that but like i said it isnt worth getting a whole new xbox just to have have HDMI. VGA while analog still puts out a much better picture than component cables. So whats better a new xbox or just a new cable? That is of course if you have a Tv / monitor that supports VGA.
