Does overhyping of a game hurt that game?

I have noticed that when the game sites, magazines, etc go into super hype mode it tends to hurt the games ratings. Like Assassins Creed I thought this was a 9.0 game but alot of people gave it somewhat lower scores because their was so much hype and it did not live up to it. In my opinion thats also why I think madden 08 was not getting very high ratings from everyone because everyone was hyping it up to be the best ever.Although there are exceptions. Anyway thats just one of my observations.

yeah halo3 is a big improvement over halo2 but people overhyped it and they were "let down" even though it has way more ft. then halo 2

I think it really depends on us, the players. Game sites and magazines get to play these games way before we do alot of times, alowing them to get an impresion. I'm not saying hyping doesn't exist but I feel that, sometimes, as gamers we tend to be harder on those games. Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed are good games but had there share of problems, as a result some people jugded them on that, and some people liked them for what they were. Either way they sold extremely well because they were recived fairly well all together. Lair flat out sucked yet people (fanboys included) still supported it, not wanting to follow the reviews.

I think it comes down to following your own observations rather than following hype or other peoples exagerated opinions.

Yes, overhyping games is what created this mass hate on Halo 3. If it had just been advertised the same as any other game people would not still be making "I hate Halo 3" topics 4 months after the fact.

The original Fable is a good example of this.

I never seen anything hyping Fable at all though. I borrowed it from my older bro and it instantly became probably my favorite and most played Xbox game ever.

I'd have to go with this because if you liked the game when you played it why not give it a good rating

Gears definitely did not live up to the hype and CoD4 lived up to it better than most but there are still some major flaws people fail to address and keep on pretending that the game is still immaculate.

1 word, 1 number

Halo 3

Ok game, horribly over-rated. I had alot of fun playing it today with a couple friends though, but if I just play it by myself then it just ends up pissing me off and I end of getting no fun out of the game.

Lol, I wasnt on these forums when Gears came out so I dont know how hyped it was and I wasnt hyping it. Call of Duty 4, despite a rather short campaign, still lived up to the hype for me.

CoD 4 had very little hype being released the same month as Assassins Creed and Mass Effect. Its funny though that at the years end CoD4 was still the best game. (Aside from Halo 3 imo but I just really love the Halo series.)
