if you sit right in front of the tv, then yes, but the effect is no worse than if you were just watching tv while sitting directly in front of it

Actually people who play video games have a 20% percent better vision to those who don't. Its because those who play games use their eyes to pick up things in games quicker and more clearer. But because of this, do not face to face with the tv screen, thats a no no.. xD

You eyesight should not become loosened due to game playing unless an opponent were to strike you incredibly hard on the back on skull in a fit of rage.

eyesight cant be lost by "watching" anything unless it was the sun, or any other form of extremely bright light, its rlly just a genetic trait i think

Yeah, what aris said.  It was a very interesting read.  iirc it said that gaming (mostly fps games) can improve your peripheral vision as well.  It's like using any muscle, it gets stronger.

Yeh, xgamer40 is right. It's an old wives tale that your eyes go bad looking at a tv too close or for too long.

no it doesn't it's just if you play for too long it will interfere with your watching television and using the computer and reading that's what makes you r eye's focus on one thing just try to do every thing at once and you will be surprised on what you can do if you do what I'm doing which is dividing things like reading playing video games watching television and using the computer and listing to music which is always important.

there are a few formulas for calculating the distance you should sit from your TV for optimum viewing, the one I've seen is for every diagonal inch on your TV you should be a distance of 2.5 inches. for example a 40 inch TV should put you roughly 8 feet 4 inches away. 40 inches * 2.5 = 100inches / 12 = 8 feet 4 inches. cut and paste this into your browser http://www.jakeludington.com/archives/000538.html its toward the bottom of the page with a "1" in front of the paragraph

Apparently we gamers make better surgeons than regular folk too. Hand/eye co-ordination and all that.

the hand eye coordination is a definite.  altho i do feel like i lose my eyesight when i play lumines live and geometry wars.  the colors in those games on hdtv's are soooo vibrant and colorful.  takes a lot of effort to figure out what ur looking at on the screen with all the craziness and distractions on screen

Second that. Playing Lumines, after a while, everything but the screen seems to blur out and the blocks go all vibrant. Probably not a good thing.

I found that with Bejewelled 2 as well. It's probably because they're simple games - there's not much variation in what you're looking at.
