Hi Guys,

I've been searching the net to find out if the Xbox 360 upscales standard DVDs to hi-resolution. In my search I found that it will upscale with VGA, but does it upscale with HDMI?

I dont have a 360 HD DVD player, but I have an Elite if that has any upscale diferances compared to the pro...

Thanks in advanced for posting

to my knowledge it only upscales dvd's when you have an HD-DVD player attached to the console.

Yea, it will upscale. It also does it with the VGA cable.

Honestly though, I found my A2 HD-DVD player to do a much better job of upscaling. If you do plan on getting an HD-DVD 360 add on...I'd just go get the A2 (or better) stand alone player. Better upscaling and less wear and tear on your 360.

yes, it does upscale, I have a large standard def DVD collection and I have tested them all using first my regular DVD player and then my 360 DVD player. It is a large difference. The main thing is that you need to adjust the settings on your 360 to output 1080i or p first. Once you do that, alot of the grain and distortion will go away from the 360 upscaling your DVD's. I confirmed this as well by calling xbox support. Have fun man, I am doing the same thing by staying out of the format war until 1 wins.

An dvd upconvertor upscales a DVD to 1080i

The Xbox 360 plays DVD's at 480p with Component cables.

that comment was not needed. He's not lying, it's just an unclear answer. I've been looking over google and other sites and I've found different answers to his question, even from the Xbox site. Originally they said a 360 wouldn't upscale, but now it looks like the elite may with VGA or HDMI. If I were you I'd keep looking for a clearer answer.

I just checked it.. and w/ the HDMI cable to my 1080p HDTV it WORKED.. it makes sense really... All 360 games can be upscaled by the 360, so why not the DVDs too. The VGA cables seemed to work to the naked eye, but the tv wouldn't tell me wat the specs of the picture were....

If I were me, which I am, I wouldn't look anywhere because I KNOW that the 360, in all shapes and flavors DOES upscale with VGA and HDMI. That guy is lying, or at least severly missinformed because the 360 does support that.

From Xbox.com:

A common buzzword in 3-D circles nowadays is "1080p," which refers to the highest possible HDTV resolution available: 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at 60 frames per second (fps). Only a portion of today's HDTVs even support this resolution, but if yours does, Xbox 360 can display games, HD DVD**, and even upscaled DVD video in full 1080p glory+. Of course, other resolutions such as 1080i, 720p, and a variety of LCD monitor resolutions are available as well. The maximum available resolutions for your set depend on how you connect it to your Xbox 360:

ConnectionGames HD DVD DVD HDMI 1080p 1080p 1080p* VGA 1080p 1080p 1080p* Component 1080p 1080i 480p S-Video 480i 480i 480i

* Upscaled from 480p

That table didn't show up right but check the link.

I have the elite, and a 26" HDTV hooked up with HDMI and I can honestly say regular movies look the same. If it does "upscale", it sure as hell isn't much.

and FYI, blueray will lose.

Well here is an article, albeit an old one that suggests the 360 upscaling is quite bad.

Proof is in the pudding. Standard dvds in my 360 still look "standard". Standard dvds in my Blu-ray player look upscaled. Proof is in the pudding. MS lies to make more sales. You have been duped!

No I think since you have a Blu-ray disc player, you are the one that has been duped.

While agree with your final comment, I must point out that on a TV that small, you aren't going to be able to notice the difference. Also what is the highest resolution your TV supports because I would be suprised if it even supports 1080i.

Well said my friend. I own a 1080i 52" TV and the 360s upscaling is noticeable through a component connection. I have a 5 disc DVD player and after watching the latest Harry Potter on it, I'm going back to my upscaled 360. That's just me folks. To each his/her own. but yeah, the upscaling feature was added to the Spring 07 update right? Or was it October 2006? I just got my 360 in October 07 so I've had this great feature from day one.

I think it does. My DVDs look better in the Xbox with the HDMI. I have a DVD player with component cables but it is cheap though, so I don't know if that DVD is a good reference point.

the 360 does upscale with both vga and hdmi-to check play a dvd and press the info button on the tv remote-somewhere it will tell you how many lines on the screen it is using so if you have 1080p is should say 1920 x 1080, if its a 720p tv then is will say 1280 x 720 or 1360 x 768 with vga!!

if it doesn't make sure you've set the xbox to the right setting-go to the last blade, console settings, and then display and change the settings to the max your tv can do-this isn't just with dvds its the same setting for games or whatever else you're doing

-if you're using the component cable make sure you've set the switch on the cable to hdtv (still doesn't uspcale dvds though)

It does support 1080i but I like 720p more. Also, my 360 is using optimal resolution for gaming.
