When you say 1080, do you mean 1080i or 1080p? Because it does make a difference.

What the above said,

Resolutions in pixels

1920 x 1080p

1280 x 720p

1920 x 1080i

Definitely read this, if you need to know more about interlaced(i) and progressive(p). It helps.

Also, you don't need to read all 5 parts in this link. The 1st part is enough to give you an idea.

Just as a side note, on the back of each game where it says how many players and other info it also tells what resolution the game runs in.

Its debateable, pretty much every game made is 720p native. Even the glorious over billed 1080p is still upscaled 720p, so unless your using an impressively sized TV the difference is not that great. As for 1080i, I avoid it at all costs now, I've been tinkering with both my 360 and PS3 and I must say nothing looks good in 1080i compared to 720p games, hd moves, nothing. Why it exists is beyond me, small to mid size HD sets look better in 720p and larger sets look better in 1080p, 1080i is useless now.

Is 720p seriously better than 1080i? I mean, the resolution is higher, but I guess it's not progressive. I've checked 720p out before, and I can't honestly see a difference. Maybe it's too subtle to notice. I always run in 1080i because my screen is only 26".

In some cases, 720p & 1080i would have no differences especially on screens 32". Otherwise, when you watch movies or plays games that have very fast frames, you would notice something like lines when your tv displays something that's in fast motion. Take the time to read the link I provided above.

CRAP!! Always making typos.

CORRECTION: In some cases, 720p & 1080i would have no differences especially on screens BELOW 32".

You should'nt notice a big difference on a 26" screen, but 1080i is basically 540p with interlaced black lines. You will be getting a higher pixel-count with 720p

My Samsung 30 inch I think it is? or 32, whatever is a 1080i hdtv with one hdmi port so I use that with the hdmi cable running at 1080i and it looks sick! not even gonna bother with 720p, basically cause my tv is a 1080i and when I set it all up I noticed my tv and 360 agreed on 1080i so i'm not gonna mess with their decision. I might lower it to 720p one day to see the difference but 1080i looks insane on my Samsung.

I have a 42inch LCD TV, personally I would have to go with 1080i than 720p. I just notice a lot clearer detail in the graphics; such as Oblivion.

Hey you idiots do know that 720p is only 480p, however stretched (upscaled) out onto a widescreen tv. 720p does not technically exist it was created as a marketing point for Walmart brand televisions and Best Buy. But, I mean if you do think 1080 RESOLUTION!!! is less superior than 720 RESOLUTION, than my friends you are blind. Progressive vs. Interlaced is only an issue with larger tvs or LCD / Plasma. The progressive scan will refresh faster than interlaced and since most LCD's and Plasmas are crap to begin with you do need progressive. Personally you want best picture CRT is still most superior and when the flat panel CRT's come out it's gonna pawn anything in existence....You want good picture look up that technology before people that don't know jack falp their jaws on 720p.

Here's the thing...

Try both settings - it won't hurt anything - and choose which one you like better.

The problem is that each and every set will act differently - even if it's the same model. Sometimes people will notice the vertical scan line move across the screen with interlaced resolutions - this is very annoying. But many TV's the scan line isn't noticeable and 1080i will "appear" to give you better detail.

720p Will be crisp no matter what. No scan lines as there is no scanning - regardless of what TV you have.

Just try both and see which you like better - choose one - play at that res for awhile and if you don't like it - change to the other resolution.

The eternal debate between 720p and 1080i is kind of like asking which is definitively better: Chocolate ice cream or vanilla ice cream?

There's not a set factual spec that defines one as better - it's a matter of opinion.
