So after nearly ten years of production, development, cancellation, development company's closing down, re-adoption, more development, more cancellations and re-adoptions and overall development hell, Duke Nukem Forever finally arrives--and receives a 3.0/10 on GameSpot.

I haven't played the game, so I'm not in a position to speak about the game's quality. So, that's why I'm putting it out there for you to respond. Is the game really that bad, and what do you think could've led to its critical savagery--not just from GameSpot, but from other reviewers as well? Was it the years and years of development hell and constant lapses in production?

Are you a diehard Duke Nukem fanatic who has been waiting for the game for 10 years now only to have your expectations and dreams blasted by a freeze ray and shattered? Or are you not surprised at all?

It's so bad that it doesn't deserve a rating. As one of those fans who waited ten years, I wish it would have just never released. I've also lost any respect for Gearbox.

This is where I think fans need to take a step back and just appreciate what Gearbox have done - they managed to release the un-releasable game. The game was fairly well developed by the time they took the helm of the project, it's not as if they re-built it yet again from the ground up. I would expect that the shell of the game was there and all that Gearbox did was polish it as much as possible for the release. Sure it's crass, lacking and feels out of place - but it gets me excited to see what Gearbox are capable of in a few years when they get the chance to make a Duke Nukem title from the ground up. Think of this as collateral damage, and look forward to something potentially great.

It should have stayed un-releasable or they should have rebuilt it. Gearbox is a good company, they just apparently didn't feel like giving this game the attention it needed. I mean come on, Gearbox had a hand in Halo: Combat Evolved, a hand in Half-Life, and developed Brothers in Arms games and Borderlands, and this is the best they can do?

I bought it day one regardless of the many negative reviews. I'm only 17 and am definatley not a die hard Duke fan. But this game, ironically, is a breath of fresh air. Sure the graphics aren't great, the load times suck, and theres a few fram rate issues, screen tears every once in a while, but the game gets so many things right. The dialogue is hilarious, as long as you can handle very immature jokes, the creativity is ingenious, the multiplayer is old school chaotic fun, and it's got great variety in the campaign.

I think they should have released it for $30 for what it is... it's a game that is 14 years old with some updated graphics. Imagine paying 60 dollars now for most games that were made in 1997... won't happen too often. Just for a few HD game remakes from last generation, and even those are usually less money.

That's easy for us to say sitting back not knowing what was going on behind the scenes. I'm sure that a condition of Gearbox taking over the franchise would be that it saw a release date within a certain time-frame, as opposed to them just acquiring the franchise and starting a new build themselves. We've seen what they are capable of with Borderlands, Colonial Marines is shaping up nicely and we know Gearbox could do a lot more than DNF. I think there are more reasons then meet the eye in reference to how this turned out.

I'm not really surprised, it looks okay I guess. I think a majority of people will purchase it for nostalgia, and I never played the old Duke Nukem games so I really couldn't care less about this game.

You cant really blame them. They were handed a turd and asked to polish it which they did to the best of their ability. If they had control of the project from the very start im sure things would be much different.

well I dont trust GS reviews sometimes. After they gave GTA IV a 10.0 I really started to doubt the accuracy on the high end. but now I dont think I can trust them when they give a game a 3.0. If DNF was based off of a movie, i could see it. and if i hadn't played the demo already, I'd believe it a little more. but nope. I played the demo and liked it. I am sure this game is worth at least a 6. So I am going to RENT the game and then write a REAL review that isnt based off of what I THOUGHT the game SHOULD have been like. Maybe, just maybe, GS actually is right. but I think the reviewer was just bitter that the game is NOT an HD remake of the original Duke Nukem 3D. They are remembering the original as being MUCH better than it really is.

That is likely true. If they get another shot at it from the very beginning then it will probably be very different.

No. I am not a die hard COD fan, but at least those games are polished and finished. What happened to Duke is it went through multiple producers and until Gearbox noone knew what they were doing, and by the time Gearbox got it, it was far too late.

It is an god awful shockingly bad game,After all this time this is the crap they bring out,It worked back in the day with its jokes and stuff but now rather than an assault on political correctness the game feels uncomfortably like watching your dad trying to dance at a wedding and being rebuffed by a bridesmaid 20 years his junior.

Like people have stated before, the review is one persons opinion, too see if you like the game yourself, you have to play it. Take Godfather II, the reviews give it a 5.0 or something low like that but personally i liked it and gave it a 8.0. From what i have seen of DNF it looks ok.

It's alright, not really worth buying. Overall I'd give it a 6/6.5 of 10.

I'm really hoping that a sequel to DNF will be much much much better.

Black Ops was not a disappointment. You knew what you were getting with Black Ops and you got it. You thought you knew what you were getting with Duke, and it didn't come close to living up to what it was supposed to. I feel bad for Gearbox. They are taking all the flak for where other developers failed. You cant polish something like that, you just can't.

Every video I see makes me think that this is what you should expect from duke. Mindless fun. Something that doesnt necessarely translate to "good reviews".

Thats why I have found myself not even reading reviews anymore. Im getting it this weekend, and I'll judge for myself if

Is it really that bad ???

^ Exactly what I'm wondering... Why is anyone even talking about an awful game? There are so many critically acclaimed games out there, you could spend your entire life playing top-tier games and you'd never run out of games to play... just FORGET about the 3.0/10 titles, haha!

The game was a crap ten years ago. Why sequel with pretty much the same plot and concept should be somehow better than that?

I remember playing Duke Nukem 3D a very long while ago, not much of the best gaming expirience even for stone age of industry if I must say.

I had a feeling that Duke Nukem: Forever would actually get average reviews/ratings... nevermind appauling ones. But with that being said, I like the Duke, and I still want this game and as such I am just going to wait for a price drop, as I have a feeling it will go down in price very quickly with all this negativity surrounding the game. I understand what the reviews are saying and whatnot, but as a Duke fan I still want this game :). I know I will enjoy it, as I like to give any game that interests me a chance, such as Legendary, Hour of Victory, Battle For The Pacific, TimeShift and BlackSite: Area 51 to name but a few. This is a title I will definately be picking up in the coming months :D. To be honest with you though, it was kind of expected that it wouldn't get amazing reviews.

Unfortunately, in times like these, i need to the reviews. Games cost so much that i can't afford to make a bad purchase. THIS sounds like a bad purchase. I'll wait a couple years for it to hit the bargin bin.

I'm a casual gamer, so I thought it sucked. Graphics were what I expected (see: Halo 2). Gameplay was a bit clunky. etc.

I know it's meant to be a parody - and I did find it amusing at times - but the game was little more than a comedic act. I might buy it if it were a cheap arcade game. $60? Pass...

Yep, I think it got a 5.5 on IGN too. Better than a 3, but still mediocre. I was actually thinking of buying this game at some point until I read the ratings and reviews. It's kind of depressing for the developers since they've put so much development into this.

There's no way this game deserves above a 5. I played the PC demo and it feels like a game from like 7 years ago with slightly decent graphics. I love Duke dialogue, but some of it is just dumb now....still I laughed a big now and then. :)
