Hello Everyone,

To be conscise, my question is whether anyone has used their XBOX 360 as a DVD player to view standard def (480p) DVD's on an HDTV (720p or greater)? Does the 360's DVD player do a decent job of upconverting regular DVDs to be viewed on an HDTV? Or do they look grainy and poor?

Heres why i am asking:

I am planning on purchasing an HDTV in the near future but i have some worries about watching movies on it. My friend has a 40" 1080p samsung HDTV and when we watch regular DVD's on it--they look very grainy. I am not sure if he has his DVD player set to upconvert the regular 480p DVD to something his TV can handle or not...

But this got me thinking, my entire DVD collection are regular DVD's--if i purchase an HDTV and want to watch a movie are they all going to look that bad? I hear that certain DVD players are able to upconvert a standard DVD to near HD quality and I am wondering if the Xbox 360 does a decent job of this?

Thanks in advance,

S

I use my xbox360 as a dvd player as well and i also have an HDTV tat supports 1080p. I have noticed a sharper and clearer picture with my dvds though i havnt noticed a bigger change on newer dvds where as older ones while looking fine dont seem to be to much different from a standard defenition tv. but i would say all in all you should be fine. because it works good for me.

if you use component cables you will notice a sharper cleaner 480p picture.

I am not as picky as some HDTV users who can pick out flaws to a much higher extent then I can, but I have not noticed any grainy display as you have mentioed when watching movies on my HDTV through my 360. However my HDTV is only 1080i.

When using component cables the 360 WILL NOT upscale the DVD image to HD resolution. By using HDMI or VGA it will upscale the image. It depends on your TV but I personally use VGA and it is sooo much sharper than using the component cables as they give a really blurry image.

yea it's better if you are using a pc desktopmonitor.

if you are buying a TV use the standard components that come with the360 , or if you have Elite us HDMI.

only use VGA for a monitor tho ,(pc desktop monitor.....)

if its overly grainy and a recent dvd not a old or low budget release then maybe he would get a better picture by changing the black reference levels. makes the difference on my tv

also when i play dvds using my 360 as the dvd player it changes the resoloution to 576p and does make the newer dvds look better picture wise
