E74: AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. (this could also be a problem with the internal AV encoder chip)
So check your cables, or try / get a new one.
How do I try another AV cable? The cables are specifically made for the 360. And what do you mean check the AV cables? Check what specifically? They are plugged in...I've tried unplugging and replugging them in and it hasn't helped.
I called MS and they said to send it in for repairs which will cost $168 plus shipping.
Take your hard drive out and then start your console and see if it does it ok. If it starts without showing you the error message, then turn it off attach your hard drive again and then turn it on again, that might help you too.Rick_Moni
Tried that, it didn't help.
better start plan B then. Call microsoft. It isn't as painful as you might think. When I got the 3 red lights on mine, I was dreading that call(I hate talking on the phone), but it isn't that bad and you get your 360 back within 2 weeks.Metallicadam379
I already called microsoft before I even made this post. They said it will cost $168 CDN plus shipping to repair it. I never dreaded calling them, I just think that it is stupid to have to pay almost $200 to fix it just over a year later when the system cost me $500. The failure is due to microsoft's faulty hardware and I shouldn't have to pay them to fix their own mistake. If I had done something to cause it, I would have no problem paying to fix it since it was my fault, but it isn't.
i wonder if yo8u could take it to EB and request a refurbishment for it? i dont know how much it would cost of if they would even do it, but i dunno, just throwing an idea outslayer85
You mean ask them to replace the system with a refurbished one? Or get mine refurbished?
Great news everybody! I just called xbox support to complain to them because I found articles all over the web that any console manufactured before January 1st 2006 was eligible for a free "out of warranty" repair. So I called them and requested this as I had purchased a launch console that was manufactured in October 2005. The guy said that the "promotion" had expired in February, but when he pulled up my account, it says that I am still within warranty. When I called the other day (Saturday) the woman I spoke with said I was not in warranty and would have to pay...
I had sent them an email this morning saying I would rather spend the money it would cost to repair my 360 on a Nintendo Wii...I wonder if that did anything....
crap i have the same problem and I've already called Microsoft and the box should be getting here today. It could just be the cables? Now i don't know what to do cause if its the cables I just need to go get them but if its not then I'm gonna be buying cables i don't need. I bought new cables from EB for $20 (mad catz brand) and it didn't help. But EB said when I bought them that they will take them back opened, but only for store credit.
i have the premium, bought the "august 2006" (when it was manufactured [as it says on the disk drive inside]) so i got the e74 too, but it went away the first time so i thought everything was okay, but no today the stupid box got the e74 once again just from restarting it minutes after it worked, but i opened up my xbox and put the whisper fans in so nothing would go wrong again (and modded the case) so if anyone knows how to fix this with a voided xbox since its opened up plz reply me

Same thing happened to me and about 5 friends last month. Just do the walmart swap and it'll be fine.
Incase you don't know what that is, you buy a new 360, put the old one it its package, and take it back asking for a refund because it won't work. I've done it 3 times and it always works :)

Actually, it's an AV cable or GPU failure.

WTH - guys - why are people recommending 'walmart' repair. Talk about cheating / lying / morally bankrupt.
Telling MS its 3 red lights instead of 1 seems lame too - I think they will pay for it if they should pay for it either way.
I just got this thing (E74)- called MS - first time they had me un plug everything and then re-plug and it came up ok. Then later when I started playing force unleashed again in a little bit the image was all grainy again.
I called MS a second time (as they had asked me to do if it happened again) and they had me try a second cable.
This did not stop the red blinking light for my xbox, and so they are sending me a shipping label to send it in for repair. Yes I am under warentee partially because of the extended warentee they gave everyone, and I also bought the extended warentee for both my 360's.
Im not sure how impressed I am with the hardware reliability, but I do know I use my 360s ALOT, and that support and replacement has been good - I am very happy with the service.

hooray for dishonesty...wait no, thats stealing
[QUOTE="Bulova"]When I turned on my 360 this morning, I got one flashing red light (the bottom right of the ring) and the error E 74. Anyone know what this means or how to fix it? I'm out of warranty and don't want to send it to MS when it's their screw up to begin with. It's ridiculous to have to pay another $200 to fix it ($168 CDN repair cost plus shipping).BaconB1ts123
Your price is all wrong. It is $122 Canadian plus tax. Shipping is included and they come to your door. It is still too much for that errror but who would pay $200 when the new 60 gig pro is $299?
I was going to say the same thing. Mine was like $130 canadian and included shipping. A new arcade is $199 canadian and comes with a wireless congtroller, 2 games and 5 arcade games. I should have just got one of those since I could have got HDMI.
