I can't back up the new games being used thing but saying they don't check there cd's before they buy them is kind of crazy. You should understand that there are millions of cd's they have to look at a day. Not to mention several of those stores have actually have disk readers to check the cds. Thats why they have the return policy they have. As for employees taking home new games and bringing them back and selling them new. I'm glad someone finally realized that people in the company are doing it. As a employee there myself I hope Gamestop pays for it. Workers there should not be taking home brand new games and playing them... Its just a terrible idea.

Funny thing I bought Dead Space just the other day "brand new" but they only had one left so they gave me one that goes with the display box which was in terrible shape but when I got home to inspect the game it had several small scratches and fingerprints on it. Suffice to say I returned it the next day (to a differnt Gamestop) and exchanged it for a real new, sealed and un-gutted copy without any hassle. It still however pisses me off that it happend in the first place so I doubt I'm gonna do buisness wit GS for a while.

Some time last year, there was a conversation taking place within the forums on 'GAMESPOT' concerning 'GAMESTOP'.. I can't remember the exact words of the original post.. BUT, I remember my responce to the post.. which read something like this.. "As a gamer that only usually buys new titles/games, personally I never buy games from high street stores like 'GAME' or 'GAMESTOP'.. Friends have worked within these stores, and on numerous occasions I've been told that new games often get taken home by staff, later to be sold to the general public as brand new when returned back to the store !.. Knowing this info, a few years ago I decided never to use these stores again. Since then, I've only bought factory sealed games which include the original authenticity sticker and the original cellophane wrapper".

If your buying a new game, just ask the guy in the store if they have a factory sealed copy.. Most store assistants are usually happy to get you one from the store room.. I'm usually honest, by telling them that I don't buy opened games.. But, if your not that confident, just say"it's a gift" and you would prefer it if it was still sealed !

Remember, when buying new games.. try to buy titles with the original factory sealincluding authenticity sticker, especially when shopping on the net !

I got into it with a manager of Gamestop who sold me a copy of Valkyrie Profile 2 used as new. It was blatantly scratched up, he told me it was from placing it into the envelope to keep it out of the case since it was "new" and the only copy the store had... It was used, no way an envelope did the scratching he claimed.

My boyfriend now just had a conversation about it recently since he used to manage a Gamestop before we met. Apparently, everything the article says was true because I wrote about it happening here before I checked the article. No point in repeating it. But yea, ridiculous.

Apparently, at least from his store, employees could take new games home for a little while as long as the store wasn't in demand of them. They typically had a designated "take home" copy that you had to be careful with because they sold it as new as soon as they ran out of other new copies.

they musnt have been too careful haha

Yea, I mean I returned my copy of VP2 to the man just because he was lying. I just thought it was insane that they would try to do something like that. I work at a puppy store on weekends (puppies are fun) and sometimes people take puppies home over night. We have used puppies. But, that isn't the same thing.

I used to work at an EB and my managers would take home those gutted copies; they got to play halo 2 before it was released. Lucky dogs. They never let me take home any freaking games...

But honestly; i'm not going to complain about them not letting me or the fact that they took games home.

Yea, they should treat the games better if they borrow them, but playing the games gives them more knowledge about the game, therefore, allowing them to sell the game easier. What? THIS IS A SALES TACTIC!? WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT!? (sarcasm)

So! I have no problem buying from these stores, because:

1) You can tell if they did their own shrink wrap on a case (it usually always has a small hole in it, and there's a huge crease on the side), SO: I'll ask for a different copy.

2) If they hand me a brand new copy that's not shrink wrapped, I'LL: ask for a different copy, or ask to see the disc.

GENIUS!

In conclusion, allowing employees to take home games helps them sell those games so just be on guard. Check the case, check the disc, and don't be a moron.

This is one of the many reasons I refuse to shop there, they are honestly just out to rip everyone off... I would honestly rather buy my games at Blockbuster or Amazon before i would go to Gamestop or EB Games.

Not surprised. When I used to go into a Gamestop and ask for a game that was new and they didn't give me a copy of the game that was sealed I would just walk out the door.

The idea that EB and Gamestop take new games out of their case and then return them upon purchase has always stood as one of the most questionable business practices i have ever witnessed, and it's the main reason i don't buy games from there. The last time i tried, i had pre-ordered MK: Armageddon for the ps2. First ff, I had paid ten down, and asked what the price would be, which i was assured would be 59.99. The day it arraived, they called me to pick it up, and i asked the remaining balance, and they told me 5 dollars more than originally stated. That was enough to anger me, so i went in and talked to the manager and explained. He was actually willing to come down the 5 bucks, and then low and behold, he takes an empty case out, and places my discs in it. For a freakin' pre-order. The game had only been in their stock for one day, and they had raped every case for the discs inside already. I got my money back and went to Future shop. It really seems that the very practice is illegal. Why? Buy a new sealed game, walk out through their doors in plain sight of the staff, remove the plastic and then try to take it back. They'll tell you it's used. Based on the copyright act that was imposed with little judgement beforehand, the store is able to say the game may have been copied, used, etc. But lo and behold, the mighty EB/Gamestop are above the law. It's pitiful. And even from a business standpoint it doesn't make any sense. Why remove the games at all, unless there is something shady going on. It's not to save shelf space, they have to keep all of the cases anyway. If anyone could possibly explain why they do it i'd love to hear it. And subsequently shoot it down.

I'm a manager at GameStop and that article is true. We ARE allowed to take out brand new games, sealed and all, and play them and return them within a four day period. This is for product knowledge BUT, I have always been against it. It really is some thing that shouldn't be done because it is classified as used. As for gutting new games and putting them in an envelop, that's because we don't get display cases to put on the shelves so we have to some way show that we have new games in stock. I will agree that it isn't the best but it is the only way we can display them for our store. I do however, check the game for scratches and tell the customer that it has been taken out of its sealed case and put into the envelop. If the game has scratches I automatically put a 10% shopworn discount and I try to help out my customers as much as I possible can.

Gamestop is a very shady place, I hardly ever do business with them anymore and for good reasons like this one. I remember one time about 6 or 7 years ago I bought a brand new game and when I got home and opened up the game from the its sealed wrapper (plastic and all) there was nothing in it. It was ridiculous, you can't imagine how angry I was I mean I watched them take it from behind the glass with all the other new games, sealed and everything and yet there was nothing in the case. Needless to say I did actually go to the store and get a new one, they kind of laughed it off which didn't help and from there on out my gaming needs where done with Gamestop unless it was a big release and I preordered in which I now only use Amazon for.

Please tell me that as a manager of that store you have to say that for legal reasons. Any semi-intelligent SPECIES would see the flaws with that statement. You don't get display cases? The games COME in their own display cases. You smply need one dummy case, which could be taken from your "preview" copy, or whatever you want to call the loan copy. Put that one on the shelf, and all new copies in storage.

I no longer support these stores. If I want a used game, then I'll go to www.goozex.com. I've had only success on that site so far (though I'm a fairly new member).

Eh, when I buy new games from Gamestop then I try to get them with the wrapping on it so I know theyre actually new. If they dont have the wrapping, then I usually go to WalMart or FYE, and sometimes even Sears.

That's one of the reasons why I only buy factory sealed stuff. They pulled this crap on me awhile back with Transformers on the PS2 (the good one). Gamestop only had the display copy left, so I asked the kid to let me look at the disc. The disc was really scratched up and had finger prints on it. I asked him if this was a new copy. He said, "yep! never been played". I looked at him like, "what do you think I'm stupid. . . .or 9?". I told him that I didn't want it because it was used. He kept reassuring me that it was new. I told him that it was a used game and I should only have to pay the used price. He then proceeded to argue with me about it. He said, "well if the game is played in the store and never leaves, then it's new, but as soon as it leaves the store it's used". What kind of crock of crap is that!? So basically the store can muck up new games and still sell them a full retail price. No thanks. Factory sealed or bust!

Oddly enough, this happened to me when I bought Rainbow Six Vegas, and Vegas 2 on separate occasions. Vegas 2 was in excellent condition, but it was still opened. The first Vegas had the instruction manual all torn up.

Bad business practice, but I still shop there because they usual have a wider variety of games compared to most major retailers. And their prices aren't too bad.
