Very difficult choice. I would say it comes down to personal preference. I'm going to say Oblivion, but this is a really, really close call.

in oblivion you can pretty much go any where you want... mass effect is a great game and one i love but it doesnt have as much freedom as oblivion does.

Mass Effect's story is much better, but Oblivion has an awesome free roam landscape. This is probably the hardest comparison anyone has posed on this board. I'd say, if you're short on cash, get Oblivion now (it's cheaper) and wait for Mass Effect to drop in price. You shouldn't miss out on either of them though.

I'd go with Mass Effect.

It's already been said but Mass Effect's story is much, much better. Combat is more fun in ME as well imo. Oblivion will last you quite a bit longer, but excessive quantity does not equal excessive quality. Oblivion was fun, but I had more fun playing Mass Effect.

Agree...Both are outstanding, but given the cost difference you'll get plenty out of Oblivion until ME drops in price. Then you can just snatch up ME when it does drop in price and you get a win win situation, but I agree 100% do not miss out on either one.

Edit: for stupid spacebar not working anymore :(

Did you finish Mass Effect? Oblivion's story doesn't hold a candle to Mass Effect's.

He's probably one of those people who judged the entirity of the game based on the first 30 minutes of gameplay.

I think the real question is whether your going to like fantasy or sci-fi? That's the biggest difference between these two games is being in an old fashioned world like Oblivion playing with swords, plate armor, horses, and elfs or using guns while flying ships, space suits, aliens, and exploring planets. Personally I love RPG but have always wanted to explore the sci-fi side more than fantasy which I personally think has been overdone. I also like first person shooters so both my interests combined well when playing Mass Effect. Also thegraphics, music, story, and sound wise its more fleshed out as a newer game. Long term wise Mass Effect will be the beginning of a triology, so what you do in this game won't feel like a waste and you'll probably will get to transfer your character into the sequel. Personally dialogue is a central interest for me especially in being able to decide ethical decisions and Mass Effect has mastered that conversation interactivity better than any other in game history so far.You can make ethical decisions in Oblivion too but its morein the actual gameplay than in the conversations you have with characters. What I found most lame about Oblivion is you can't even here your own character's voice talk during dialogue, so they don't really have as much a personality. The downside is once you beat Mass Effect you can no longer explore the galaxy anymore. When you beat Oblivion you can still explore everything sort of like GTA. Although I'm not sure how interesting it really is to explore a world once you've already beat the game, assuming you've completed the side quests. Rarely do people like both fantasy and sci-fi styles especially in games as they're polar opposites, so it will depend on your theme taste. But in terms of overall quality in the current game market Mass Effect is far more advanced in all aspects, its just that the places you explore are divided up into different planets instead one big sandbox like Oblivion.
