What we know:

-It is being worked on (for how long is unknown, but likely at least 8-10 months or more)

-It's 'penciled' in for a 2010 release

-Will come out for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC (but not Wii)

Best educated guesses:

-It will likely take place in Skyrim or Summerset Isle

-It will likely use the Obivilion/Fallout 3 engine with a few additional tweaks (developing a whole new engine for this generation would simply take too long)

-If the Elder Scrolls V team started immediately after Fallout 3 don't expect ES: V until November 2010 at the earliest (the Fallout 3 DLC developers are a different team)

The offensive spells need to be reworked... they were kind of boring (graphically).

All I know is that I want dragons and the only place, according to the lore, where they still exist is the continent of Akavir. Plus Akavir would provide gamers with four new races to choose from.

not really, it looks pretty close in screens, but not in motion, plus the animation and audio is no where near oblivion even with all kinds of mods, believe me, I spent 4 hours monday modding morrowind with all kinds of crap, and I want to see Elder Scrolls V have better combat, more actual role playing, etc

I loved the combat in IV but I agree they could do more with it. What I'd want the most is for them to simply make the game less clunky. When you see a moving character float and click in and out of place it sort of takes you out of it. Oh, and 3rd person for the love of god. Fix it or take the damn thing out.

EDIT: And yeah, I've only ever seen it in pictures. Never had the patience to search for texture and graphics mods and try to make them all work. Any chance you could point out like a pack that I could download that just has everything I need?

The Elder Scrolls MMO and The Elder Scrolls V are two different games. Bethesda started an MMO studio specifiacally for The Elder Scrolls MMO. I don't think TES MMO is still in production though because I haven't heard anything about it in a long time.

No it will not be a MMO. That would take 3-4 years to make vs. about 2 using an existing engine and format.

The "What we know" part is a compilation of quotes and hints from Todd Howard (Bethesda Executive Producer}, Paul Oughton (Publishing Executive), and Pete Hines (Bethesda Vice President).

I'm willing to bet Elder Scrolls V will be called Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the early release date will be the fourth quarter of 2010 (late October or November). This is just an educated guess based on what I've read, patents Bethesda has taken out, and the tentative release dates for the last three full Bethesda games.

that would actually be kinda cool. muskets and flintlock pistols. make you feel like more a of pirate. i also hope rare items are harder to get. no more bandits with daedric armor. i agree with the 18th century vibe though. it would be sweet. maybe a town similar to an english port and whatnot.

But you're assuming a traditional 5 to 6 year life cycle of a console. Right now looks as if microsoft and sony won't be releasing their new consoles until 2012 at the earliest, but more likely 2013.

LeGoofyGoober

Like I said above my sources are primarily quotes and hints from Bethesda executives and patents Bethesda has purchased. The next generation of consoles won't come out until 2011 at the very earliest and Bethesda has been working on the next Elder Scrolls game for at least a year (and more likely two). I highly doubt Bethesda will wait until 2012 to release their next Elder Scrolls game considering they have two development teams at work at all times.

like i said, making these games takes years. we don't even have an official announcement. a year is barely enough time to create enough concept art of enemies, creatures, landscapes, etc. if i'm not mistaken, ESlV took about 4 - 5 years to develop.

It took years to develop the engine and then the game for Oblivion. Using the existing engine they could make a game by Q4 2010 since they started well over a year ago (and likely two years ago).

And Nov. 2010 would be over 15 months away for a game that is likely using the same engine as Fallout 3 and Oblivion.

And why's that? They've already got the engine from Oblivion and Fallout 3, so it's not like they're working from scratch. 2 years development with an already-established engine is not unreasonable.

it would basically be oblivion with prettier graphics. do not want. but i see your point, and it is a fair one. however, as much as i loved oblivion and fallout, i want a new gameplay engine. a more realistic one. they could tweak it though just like so many devs tweak the U3 engine. still, creating the actual world takes quite some time.

It's highly doubtful they will make a new engine for Elder Scrolls V and will simply tweak the Oblivion/Fallout 3 engine. And Oblivion and Fallout 3 were only released 30 months apart. So if they've been working on Elder Scrolls V for 14-15 months that gives them 15 or so to go (November 2010).

true. also, i guess since they have the gameplay engine down, they can make a bigger, more interactive world. Oblivion was awesome, but nowhere as deep as Morrowind. you won me over. let em use the Oblivion engine. that way, they can make a game that is more reminiscent to Morrowind. :D

I suspect with several likely expansions like Fallout 3's five... Elder Scrolls V will be closer to Morrowind than Oblivion in terms of being bigger and more interactive. Skyrim should also be a more interesting province, like Morrowind, and not so stereotypical for a medieval looking game.

If you go to the U.S. government's trademark page (instructions on how to get there above)....the only trademark name that ZeniMax has for multiple purposes is Skyrim (for the game itself, instruction manuals/guides/merchandise, and then clothing). Based on active trademarks owned by ZeniMax don't be shocked if one of the expansions for Elder Scrolls V is called "Dishonored".

Bleh, that's what I hated about morrowind. The giant mushrooms really turned me off from the game. I much prefer Oblivion's medieval/roman style.

Alaska has everything from green meadows with flowers and butterflies to snow covered mountains to dense forests evergreens to forests with conifers and miles and miles of shore next to the sea.

They should work on making the gameplay as different as possible without straying too far away from the original formula. I refer to things like tweaking environment locations and aspects, weapons and inventory system renovation, and things like that. I would also like it if they used a bit of the elements from the new system they used in Fallout 3; that would be great. Some sort of multiplayer aspect (as in some way that you could interact with other ES players, whether it be cooperative play or trading items; sort of like Fable II but less streamlined and more deep) would be good as well.

Just the simple fact that they are working on ES: 5 is good news. I don't care how it takes.

I've always thought that they always created a new engine for each Elder Scrolls game?..

Not this time. They will just use the Oblivion/Fallout 3 engine and tweak it some. It would take way to long to develop a new engine at this point. Expect a new engine for Elder Scrolls VI for the next generation of consoles.

many hinters in conversation including in most places. so you defo cannot have an educated guess on location. also Bethesda might be working on fallout 4 as their actual dev have 2 IPs. so could be 2013, but they've boosted their staff.

I have educated guesses on location based on three trademarks purchased by ZeniMax (Bethesda parent company). They include a trademark for the game itself, another for guides, books and other merchandise and another for nothing but clothing. That trademark is called "Skyrim". And Bethesda has two development teams anyway and worked on Oblivion and Fallout 3 at the same time for awhile. Fourth quarter 2010 is the release date until told otherwise.

A long time ago someone leaked some information that it was definitely in Skyrim and there even screenshots of large snow covered mountains with castles and the like and the quality of them looked like Oblivion on steroids. It was a around a year ago or something and I can't remember where I saw it.

I never saw those and it's easy to fake screen shots. You can't, however, fake three U.S. trademarks all with the name "Skyrim".
