Online is a core component of an enjoyable 360 experience. I should know, right now I can't connect (I use an air card for my internet). The ethernet cable that comes with the system is fairly short IIRC, less than 2 meters (6ft).
The ethernet cable that the xbox comes with isn't that long...but I recommend playing games online. If you've never done it before, it's a whole different experience and the replayability is endless as long as you have friends to play online with.
I just got my x-box 360 last wedensday. The ethernet cable is short but you can get it to get longer. Also I rented gears of war 2 got online all night and it was a blast. I strongly recommend you trying to get online.
