I'm guessing in order to prevent this M$ has to do considerably more than ban your Gamertag from the service. I'm guessing that if you were to be banned from Xbox Live, your Gamertag, all IP addresses your 360 has used, and you 360's wired/wireless MAC address (in short, banning your console entirely).

so what you mean is that low-profile, 24-hour bans are just profile... but longer, 6-month, 1-year, permanent bans involve IP and hardware? sounds reasonable

in the dorm room i play in i actually have 2 different IP addresses (there's an unprotected wireless network nearby my 360 can receive and i have the wireless card) - but i think your MAC address is also banned too and there's no getting around that

they don't ban by mac address or by ip address. They ban your 360 or your profile. If they ban your 360 you can just go buy another 360 and get online with the same profile. Banning by ip address wouldn't make sense because your ip address can change if you don't have a static ip and banning by mac wouldn't work because you can probably spoof that.

well yeah i guess banning your 360 is enough deterrent... oh and if you get banned how and where do you get notified of the reason for the ban?

Wouldn't do a ****ing thing to anyone less they are rich enough to afford a static IP address.

To the Topic Creator:

What the hell is the point of this discussion? Getting banned of LIVE for cussing or using racial slurs is practically impossible.

Getting banned off of LIVE for modding is easy.

They ban your console ID, not your IP or MAC.

Perm bans are console ID, as in you'd need to get an entirely new console to play on xbox live, IP bans are useless, since IP addresses, even for cable static, are soooo easy to change.

oh noes, i get my wifes creditcard and make a new profile. I swear i read somewhere that its the hardware & profile that gets it. not only do you need a new account, but your buying a new xbox as well.

in the big picture, its better to ban the machine as it would require a person to buy a new one....more money for MS!

Your console has a unique ID, as does your harddrive. When you get banned for stuff like modding they ban the hardware you used as well as your gamertag. That console then cannot be used again on Live, even by someone else with a perfectly good gamertag. MS would also have the address you gave, plus any credit card details, and could potentially ban those from Live.

IP bans are useless, since a lot of people use dynamic IP addresses. When I used to use a USB modem, each time I connected to the internet I was assigned a different IP. Sites that record your IP address are really easy to dodge and get around when you have dynamic IP.
