I am curious if any of you share the same thought as me that FPS's such as Halo and CoD have retarded the gaming public? What i mean by that is these types of games are based on twitch movement and reactions and really do little to provoke thought. I can personallly attest that my attention span for gaming has gone way down since CoD 4 in particular. I used to really enjoy sitting down with games like Resident Evil, Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider and the like. But now it seems like all I want is that immediate gratification of shooting guys online.

People talk about how addictive MMO's like WoW can be, I kind of feel that CoD or Halo have the same effect. I know this to be true as I remember within the first 5 days of Black Ops's release, there were already guys on their second or even third prestige. That is some serious play time!

My point to all of this is that these types of games are great for gaming sales, but will ultimately keep people from playing other very good games because of their addictive nature. Your thoughts?

As an avid Black Ops fan, I have to agree with you. Two weeks ago, I bought 3 new games... Alan Wake, Just Cause 2, and Fallout 3, all of which I've barely played because I'm addicted to multiplayer in Black Ops. lol It's not a bad thing though, I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Could you list some reasons why you think it's more frustrating than MW2?

I keep my FPS-ing to a minimum, and online stat keeping games dont appeal to me. I mean... I love to know my own personal stats but when theyre fronted like a badge iyt gets too competitive to stay fun.

Good point, but your basing everything on opinion. I wouldn't go to say that "everyone" is avoiding other games to play FPS. Online FPS has just become quick, easy, and great way to play with friends. It doesn't require a lot of effort to get in a game nor does it take up a lot of time. Unlike other games which require so much more time and often will make you feel you got nowhere on certain days.

I have always played FPS as a filler. A quickie with friends for a game or two. I only end up playing 30 mins to and hour in a FPS and that feels just right. That of course is me.

You also got highly competitive people that just feel like they got to be the best, which just like MMOs, creates monsters that play endless hours.

I don't avoid other games I haven't even touched gears of war yet. Still playing Enchanted Arms so i want to finish that game then enjoy one of the others I got. (I think everyone knows by now that im playing enchanted arms) I'll buy a rpg over any game I like them the best but I gotta be into the mood to play one.

It is addictive, I play Black-Ops and half the time I find myself cursing at my TV instead of actually enjoying it lol.

Well I usually find I get caught up in games like Blops for about a month or two after they're release. But then my interest dwindles so I play something else. For example I've just cracked out my copy of just cause 2 for my 2nd play through.

Yeah, FPS games are addicting, but I like to break out Forza 3 and race for a little while, I also like to mix it up with some sort of adventure game of mine.

I never like deathmatches. They are just to repetitive for me.

FPS have many limitation for them to be too innovative.

I don't find them addictive, I find them boring to be honest. Not enough variety in the mechanics to keep me coming back.

To a certain extent I see what you are saying.

However, I think we see this issue inmany forms of media. Look at the printed word, instead of reading a full-book oftentimes people will prefer to read a magazine.I know a lot of people that have the same issues as you. Luckily I can put down FPSswith relative ease. Currently I'm playing Fallout: NV and really enjoying my experience, but my wife just cannot get away from that FPS instant gratification you are talking about!

I do enjoy a good fps and go on streaks where I play them constantly, but for me there is nothing better than a game with a great story and excellent single player campaign. I recently went back to FF 13 and finished up some stuff and just beat Fable 3 and have AC Brotherhood that I'm going to start when finals are done.

Always hated the fact that games with a nearly thoughtless process tend to be the most popular).

Online multiplayer in general gave a fierce blow to the industry, causing the decrease of value in modern games. Me? I blame it on Quake 3 Arena and WoW. Fortunately there are still games whose main focus is the single player campaign.

I have never had Xbox Live and probably won't for another year or so, so I do not get into the COD and Halo trend like most other individuals. I personally need a good story behind every game I play, not just mindless shooting. I have never been totally absorbed by those games. However I still understand where you are coming from as my friends make little time for anything else other than Halo, Gears, COD, MOH, etc. Its a shame, people need to let a little variety in their lives, my boyfriend's father won't play anything other than the games listed above and ridicules me for playing anything otherwise.

I'm actually pretty good with not becoming addicted to online multiplayer. I know how the difference between playing and having a good time and then becoming all out addicted. I like to get away from FPS and play some RPG or sports/racing games.
