There are various things you can confirm from the box's exterior. The power usage will be 175 W. The manufacturing team will be FDOU (or something like that). Also, Falcon systems will be associated with later batch numbers... which I don't recall. You can find these answers on the official xbox forums somewhere (sorry, no link).
Best thing to do is get the machine with the newest manufacturing date. The teams starting with an F or C are also your best shot. About the drives, it appears most new ones have the BenQ. A few might have the Hitachi. I believe the last Hitachi reported had a manufacture date in Jan/08.
I heard if you sent your 360 in anytime from january this year up to now they replace your old xbox with a falcon chipeed one.

I have not heard anything about this. I only heard if they send back a different machine, it'll be a refurbished one and pretty much a roll of the dice on what exactly it is.
the best method is checking the manufactures date, which is right beside the serial #...the open area on the box. I think anything manufactured after November 2007 is Falcom but i could be wrong.
I bought a new console (after my launch stopped reading discs) in Feb 2008, manufactures date is Jan 2008 and the console works perfectly.
