Can someone explain the VATS system to me? How does it work and why is it often cited as the game's only flaw? I'm trying to make a decision on whether to buy it.

the vats system is basically where you press a button, select an enemy and select what body parts you want to hit and it automatically shoots and hits for you. once you get a high enough weapons skill and grim reapers sprint you wont use anything else :PCan someone explain the VATS system to me? How does it work and why is it often cited as the game's only flaw? I'm trying to make a decision on whether to buy it.

funny you should say flaw. i personally really enjoyed the VATS system. fallout 3 has been my favorite single player game this gen!
It's only a deal breaker if you're going in to FO3 thinking it's a pure FPS. VATs turns any enemy into a JRPG boss where you can target different parts of there body by selecting them.Senor_KamiYup, sorta like Lost Odyssey where you could target different parts of a Boss (if I remember correctly..)
The Vault tech Assisted Targeting System is awsome. Say you dont want to just shoot a guy, you want to shoot his leg off. Leg, head, arm, ect. It gets pretty messy like with a close up shot gun to the face. Your head a splode! Boom!
Flaw??? There is no flaws. Fallout 3 is great so yes get this game and get ready for Fallout:New Vegas.
i would say i totally agree with everyone VATS was actually very fun imo. If your playing on easier settings then VATS makes things too easy but if you play on normal it makes you focus on which parks are best to knock out, and save your life when the enemies are owning you. I would suggest getting the GOTY edition. I got mine for 40 during black friday so i got the game and 50 dollars worth of dlc for only 40 dollars. Im not sure the prices now but id suggest getting the GOTY edition. Also id like to add i hated oblivion and i wasnt too big of an rpg fan, but Fallout 3 help me see the light. My only quip about it is that its easy in the beginning to go to an area where you get totally owned for being underleveled. Follow the main story at first then once youve leveled enough then fool around. And if you have the operation anchorage DLC you can get one of the best armors and a really good rifle in the game very early on, so if you want to have that advantage to help you through the game you can do operation anchorage and be underleveled its really easy to get through.
Flaw? It's the best part of the game and the only thing they took from the old series and implemented well (except for removing groin and eye shots). The shooting wouldn't be very good without it.
Exactly, I mean when playing fallout 3 I find vats is much easier to use rather that running n' gunning.Flaw? It's the best part of the game and the only thing they took from the old series and implemented well (except for removing groin and eye shots). The shooting wouldn't be very good without it.

Flaw? I enjoyed the VATS system a lot, why would it be a flaw?PsYcHo_BrOwNiE
I enjoyed VATS as well. Calling it a flaw is like calling the ability to jump a flaw in Mario games.
Like everyone said, VATS is awesome. Also, if you happen to not like it, it is completely optional. If you want to kill people the classic FPS way, then you can.

With the way that gun accuracy works in Fallout 3, playing the classic FPS way is almost unbearable.
But V.A.T.S. is great anyway. Just treat this game as an RPG like you're supposed to.
the Vatts was interesting; but personally would of prefered the game without it.. But that's just my opinion.
