Going Gold isn't an acronym, and is really a misused term brought over from the record industry.

It used to mean an actual physical gold disc was made with the recording on and sent to the manufacturers to press out copies. Historical use has come over to the software industry where the finalised version of the software sent to the manufacturers is referred to as the Gold Master disc. This is the final version that will be identical to the copies we all buy from the shops.

It no longer needs to be made from gold, or in fact need to be delivered physically, since it can now be done electronically.

While sales can be said to reach Gold or Platinum sales targets, these are unrelated to a game going gold before release
