There are a ton of threads comparing Fallout vs. Oblivion. I don't really get it... aside from the graphics engine they arn't that similar, its not surprising you'd like one more than the other.
Not sure which game you were asking for about the length. Oblivion is a LONG game. The main quest is decent sized, but there's also the 4 different factions and their quests, two expansions, hundreds of NPC quests and loads of achievements, weapons and dungeons to explore. You could easily spend 100+ hours if you want to do everything. Fallout doesn't have as many NPC quests or factions, but I found exploring to be way more fun so I can see myself putting in just as much as time with this as in Oblivion. So far I'm about 60 hours into fallout, but only halfway through the main quests because I've done a bunch of side stuff.
For both games its up to you to decide which parts you want to play or if you want to do everything possible in the game. Put in as much or as little time as you want.
The only thing besides the engine I found similiar was one moment in Evergreen Mills when I heard the EXACT same mellow music from Oblivion when exploring the open world. There are a ton of threads comparing Fallout vs. Oblivion. Now how can you like fallout more than oblivion, oblivion was so awesome and tons of gameplay, oh and btw I love fallout also but it cant compete against oblivion. Of course thats just my opinion.constantterrorThan how could you possibly ask why we prefer Fallout when you say "just my opinion"? Oh look, 600th post anniversary. Yay. And I'm only level nine. Isn't it creepy? Well it seems fitting for me of all people for my 600th post to be a smarta** retort.
I was wondering if I was the only one who did not like oblivion at all but can't seem to put down fallout 3 for the life of me. Also I've put about 12 hours into it and was wondering how many hours you played it before you finished thanksgmoneybball91u describe me perfectly. i don't know how many hours i've played it but i've played it almost everyday since a little after x-mas
Well... I hated Oblivion... Sorry, but this is what happened whenever I tried to play.
Make a character, do tutorial, go to Oblivion, get told to go to top of tower. I try to go, get raped by imps after a while... So, what do I do now? Well, the game expects me to find out about all the other stuff to do by myself, but that other stuff is actually the good part. However, I can never continue on with the main quest, those damn imps, no matter how high I level, I can't get past that part. It's like the main quest doesn't want me to finish it!
Hopefully I'd like Fallout 3, however, I didn't get to pick it up yet... Though I did love morrowind
I really like Oblivion. It is huge, beautiful, has a ton of gameplay, and good storylines. With that said, I LOVE Fallout 3. I think it is because 1) the FPS is integrated well and VATS makes the combat more strategic than Oblivion, and 2) the fact that Fallout is set in a real place adds to the immersion and drive to explore everything. I played Oblivion and liked it, but I have logged more hours into Fallout since Christmas (over 100 hours) than I have with Oblivion since I got it when it launched in 2006. Fallout is alos the only game I have 1000 GS for. I haven't been this addicted to a game since Ocraina of Time 11 years ago.
However, my love for Fallout has encouraged me to play Oblivion again. I am going to do it as soon as I beat Gears 2 on insane. One game at a time...

That's going to happen on Fallout as well. As it uses the same AI system as Oblivion. The enemies are scaled to your level, so their strengths are always relative to yours. And in my opinion it's tougher being a new player on Fallout 3 because the majority of the enemies have guns and can hit you from a good distance away. So if you have troublekilling Imps on Oblivion, you're in for quite the mauling if you meet up with Fallout's Super Mutants, Raiders and Deathclaws.
Not to mention that Fallout's world is just a tougher place to live in. In oblivion there are many towns and villages. Most of them have guards or some form of law enforcement. And most of the NPCs in the game are friendly. In Fallout, this is not the case. The settlements are small and scattered (except for Megaton and Rivet City) and 75%. If not more of the human NPCs are hostile and will attack you on site. That's just counting the humans. Not the wildlife and mutations.
*phew*
Lets just say that I prefer Oblivion's green wilderness settings to Fallout's irradiated wasteland. But I prefer Fallout's intense and violent combat system.
I've played both put 100's of hours in Oblivion and about 10+ hrs in Fallout 3. I plan to buy Fallout 3 as I've only played it through a rent.
But Obilivion is the better game just more freedom to the playing style. I like Fallout 3 but between getting constantly ambushed by assassins, and being outnumbered by super mutants, combat can get frustrating.

Also I've put about 12 hours into it and was wondering how many hours you played it before you finished thanksgmoneybball91I actually thought Fallout 3 was kinda boring. But I also go for the more medeival(spell check?) setting, too.
I absolutely love fallout 3 and can quite easily sit and play for many hours, however oblivion didn't capture me and i could never really get into the game. I never felt as though i got anywere, even when having put around 24hrs into it. I have not been back on oblivion since having to spend around 8hrs trying to get rid of the dreaded vampirism disease.
Fallout 3 is leagues better than oblivion in my opinion and ended up contesting for my game of 2008.
Have over 100 hrs and onto the last part of the main quest just keep ignoring it cause when it done its done. Gameover man gameover.
Just keep wandering the wastelands looking for new places to discover, killing nd blowing ##it up. War never changes yeh baby but killing never been so much fun.

Oblivion was a better game than Fallout 3. The world was bigger and looked much better. This probably sounds lame but there were many times in Oblivion when I would just stop on a hillside or mountain , look around, and just take in the view- but all of the Capital Wasteland looks exactly the same. The ending in Oblivion was 10x more epic, and you could go on and play and explore after beating the main quest, unlike in Fallout 3. The world itself was much bigger in Oblivion. There were MANY more quests to be completed in Oblivion. The whole story and setting of Oblivion was just more epic. In Oblivion there was a sense of accomplishment to reaching the top of each guild and beating the main quest, along with all of the perks and rewards that come with each. In Fallout 3 there is no such feeling- you do like 15 or so random side quests, finish the main story and watch some lame 2 minute cut-scene, and the game is over.
Fallout 3 does have many things going for it - guns are fun to play with. The whole backstory to the nuclear fallout was pretty cool, and getting bits and pieces of information about people trying to survive out in the wasteland makes the story feel more real. But Fallout 3 is just so bleak. And in Fallout 3, you can take one character and max out every single one of his skills - where's the fun in that? Having one all purpose character partially negates the need to go through and play the game as different characters. And although shooting guns is fun, the FPS mechanics just don't feel right, so I'm almost always forced to fight in VATS.
I became completely engrossed in both games, and they are both must-haves, but I think Oblivion had the overall better experience.
see Fallout 3 seemed refreshing to me because all RPGs seem to be either midevil times or future and i was glad to see a new approach because other than the fallout series itself i have not seen many that have this type of setting if any. Which one was better is debatable it depends on you preference i thought both were very well made but personally i prefer Fallout 3 because its so much more different than that of most rpgs but despite this face i still loved Obvlivion. also i think they seemed to get some stuff straightened out on the engine and overall since Oblivion so that did make Fallout 3 better in that aspect.
also for some reason i didnt fell as if i wanted to explore more in Oblivion it wasnt really worth it i mean you had all the ammo you need cause your weapons dont use them and your health could regen with magic it was so much easier than Fallout 3.
Fallout 3 is essentially Oblivion with guns and gore. jarhead1990you sir are entirely wrong lol no i see what you mean cause its the same game engine and interface but they really are not that close at all
[QUOTE="jarhead1990"]Fallout 3 is essentially Oblivion with guns and gore. armyman455you sir are entirely wrong lol no i see what you mean cause its the same game engine and interface but they really are not that close at all No. These two games are extremely similar in many respects. OBVIOUSLY...they have their differences, but when compared to all of video games they are almost the same game. Let's take a look at the similarities: Build a charcter, choose from the same exact SPECIAL characteristics. Huge open world sandbox gameplay. Choose to either do main story, or just explore and do side quests. Make good/bad decisions. Sneak, Speechcraft, Barter, Lockpick, Medicine, Repair, Unarmed- all skills carried DIRECTLY over to Fallout from Oblivion. The decision between Small Guns and Energy Weapons in Fallout, and between Blade and Blunt in Oblivion. Button layout is exactly the same. Characters look and move exactly the same (except for clothing obviously)

You know why you might like Fallout 3 and dislike Oblivion? It's because they're not the same game; go figure. I don't care how many people try to claim they're the same; by doing so you may as well just state that every RPG is exactly the same, it's all basically the same idea, isn't it? Do quests, get items and rewards, save the world or such.
Please.
Further more Fallout 3 and Oblivion are not just similar, they are identical in many ways. The way when you talk to someone the camera zooms in on the person. The way collection items etc works , for example when you take all from a dead body it leaves the body lying there in its underware (I know of no other game that does that but these two do it exactly the same!!), is identical. Even the little zipper and drawer closing sound effects of taking items is the same!!
I'm playing Mass Effect which is another RPG, its not the same as those, all the menus are different, the graphics are differnt etc, etc.
I just dont uderstand why people cant just live with the fact that Fallout and Oblivion are the same game a side from theme and storyline. Thats not even a bad thing. That would be like someone trying to claim a Jeep Liberty and a Dodge Nitro are completely differnt cars when everyone know aside from the exterior touches they are the excaxt same car with the same engine, wheel base, suspension, etc ,etc.
