I just bought Far Cry 2 on Amazon. I had played it on PS3, but I really wanted to play it again on 360, and it was only 11 bucks. I'm very curious as to what people think about FC2. I remember lots of people on the PS3 board bashed the game even after admitting they had only played an hour or so.

My opinion is that while some tweaks and additions ould have been made to take the game to an awesome level, it's still a great game.

Pros

  • The use of fire
  • Super intense firefights
  • Many things to do, and many ways to accomplish goals
  • Fantastic graphics
  • The weapon breakdown and real time healing features were awesome

Cons

  • Awful dialogue. It was very rushed with little care
  • Way too much traveling and not enough fighting in certain spots
  • Decent AI, but the roadside camps respawned at a stupidly fast and unrealistic pace

I really think that with a few extra features (more fast transit spots, more diverse missions, diversions, and a weapon mod system) and a different name (it has nothin to do with the other Far Cry games), FC2 could have been on another level. It is still an awesome game though.

What do you think of it?

Loved it, only bad thing was the traveling. I wish you could map travel , but the buses did help a bit, other then that, there's nothing that I didn't like about it

it's fun shooting people and all, but they overdid the driving. there's too many long periods of driving and the shooting doesn't make up for it

The wacky speed of dialogue was funny, but the respawning guard posts were so irritating! That is probably the only thing I would change about the game.

I used to complain about how boring the game is, but i recently picked it up again and I didn't play any side mission, only the story ones... and loved it. My pros/cons, first the pros: - weapons are many and satisfying to shoot - a multitude of possible approaches to any situation - technically excellent, I particularly loved the sound design - immersive - fire and explosion are the best ever seen in a game to date now the cons: - way too repetitive - what little plot there is, is unremarkable - unbalanced AI (particularly buddy, AI is retarded) - boring driving bits with respawning checkpoints - can't go prone (why?!) - sniping is overly simple - can't carry an assault rifle and sniper rifle at the same time - bad ending - silly achievements (10G for getting all the 120+ hidden diamonds in the game? o_O) - nothing to do with the original FarCry. They might as well have called it "How to run over zebras" All in all, a great game, despite its shortcomings. Worth playing, especially now that it's so cheap.

It was a great game the first time through. If they spent more time on it it could have been a massive hit.

I loved it. It's such an immersive game.

But the Buddy AI bothered me. I lost so many buddies because a sniper just happened to stumble upon them and pick them off while they walked around in circles...after I already made it to a safehouse and saved. If only you would have got in the jeep with me!

Too many checkpoints that respawn too quickly.

Those are all of the major complaints I have.

Its a good game if you use your imagination a bit and have fun with it. The game is a little long for a FPS, mainly due to the vast amount of driving, which gets boring quickly. The game has alot of faults, but over all its still really good. It has some of the best shooting and explosion (esp with the fire effects) that i've seen in a game. Taking out convoys was alot of fun.

I really enjoyed Far Cry 2, though driving around did kinda get annoying. I think that if the story had been much better and you actually felt compelled in some way to drive about, the game could have been awesome. It felt as if they created a really large and interesting landscape, then fit a shoddy story around this environment.

Still enjoyed the game though!

I loved it myself!

Even though the story was non-existent... Far Cry 2's visuals and the sheer quality of its gunplay easily won me over; nothing beats feeling like a predator as you lay down fire on a Merc camp, only to suddenly dash away through dry grass and slide into a new attack position, watching your enemies unknowingly race past you.

I also felt that the vehicles were extremely well-implemented.

The only negatives for me:

  1. Checkpoint respawns were ridiculous. Seemed like they were triggered by travelling a certain distance away (time would have been better)?
  2. Number of bugs the game shipped with. I had to restart because on my first 'Malaria Medicine Mission', the target NPC was stuck in the floor with only the top of his head showing... Wasting 8 hrs of exploring.

A really beautiful game. I took this screenshot after I had to assault a refinery and an intense firefight had left my boat destroyed and fire spreading up the trees. But I stopped to watch the sun's rays as they played over the water. Also if you travel by boat you don't have hardly as much hassle from checkpoints and such.

Changes I would have made:

- Guard posts would take full 24 hours(in-game) to respawn, and they would only respawn if you were the requisite distance away. That way, you wouldn't have guys just suddenly appear in front of you or whatever.

- Made hit detection, number of hits to kill, and bullet penetration noises better. The guns were really awesome in the game, but shooting enemies felt a little akward sometimes. For one, the hit detection was off sometimes(especially in multiplayer). I could be dead aiming atsomebody's head from 5 feet away, and it'll still miss sometimes. Then you had the case where if you weren't shooting somebody in the upperchest/head area, it took a lot of hits to kill. This is a video game. Lets not make things feel like work. Also, the sounds when you shoot somebody sound kinda weird. They sound kinda 'squishy' sounding. I dont know what shooting somebody really sounds like, but I do know that other games have made it more 'cool' sounding.

- Have a higher speed limit for vehicles. Every single vehicle had the same low top speed, which made the differences between vehicles kinda pointless, other than having a gun on top or not. The actual driving wasn't bad at all, but it could have been much better if there was the ability to really GO in some of em.

- Either allow custom maps on Ranked matches online, or give us the ability to keep our level-ups in Player matches. It got really annoying to have to start from scratch(upgrade-wise) every new match in Player matches. In fact, this ruined much of the fun of multiplayer, which is a shame, cuz with custom maps, the potential was HUGE. That, combined with better hit detection and less shots to kill, would have made online multiplayer a real hit.

- Vary the missions more, and add a bit more depth to some of them. The ones where you had to take out a convoy that just drove in circles was just asinine. And most were pretty simple. There were a couple cool ones, like the one where you were on a barge and had grenade launchers on all sides. But most were just repetitive and got dull after a while.

And thats about it. People complain about the driving, but I think with guardposts that dont respawn immediately, more thrilling driving(with higher top speeds), and more motivation to get to a mission(with more variation and depth), it'd be much more welcome. I personally didn't have much problem with the actual traveling. I love open-world games, and I actually spent more time on foot than in a vehicle.

The game was really good, but it was hard to look past some of its flaws. I hope they do another one, and address these problems, cuz its got the potential to beone of those must-have games.

I feel like this is a huge exageration. More often than not, you accomplish a goal by having to go in a shoot/blow everything up. This was one concept of the game that I was actually excited for, but it's definitely not what they make it out to be.

I tried to approach camps all stealthy and a guard would always see me, not because of lack of effort on my part, rather the game just doesn't allow this style of play.

i think the only thing that really bothered me was the AI and how fast they respawned. it was so frustrating to kill a camp and then come back 5 minutes later, on your way back from a mission, to have to kill them all again. just seemed silly to me.

I found that I could beat most missions by stealth. You'd get caught once in a while, but it was always fun to have switch strategy on the fly. For me, at least.

With the camo suit, dart gun, silenced pistol, and the silenced MP5, it wasn't all that hard. If you go at night, you could sneak by most anybody, pick off the one guy you needed to or whatever, and then get the hell out of there. Stealth during the daytime was harder, but still possible.

I've been trying to warm up to this game over the last couple weeks but it's incredibly frustrating. I'm only on Normal and i'm finding it very annoyingly difficult to complete missions, often having to attempt them 5 or 6 times. The distance you have to travel between locations is rediculous. Any other vehicle except the mounted turret are pointless to drive cause you just get annililated in them. And lastly, even with purchased weapons, they still decide to jam right in the bloody heart of a random firefight (guys that just seem to appear out of nowhere).

Not enjoying this game so far.

I love the campaign, but feel they messed up the online play. Especialy since they did away with predator mode, which is one of the things that made FarCry 1 so fun. I still hop on from time to time to work on the achievements or check out peoples maps. I recently started a new campaign as well. I had almost beaten it when my game froze during a save. I lost about 50 hours of game time and just didn't feel the need to play it after that.

EDIT: I'll have to agree that the respawn times on the checkpoints are horrible.

Well you could always use the distance-judging flares to get it right before sending off a real shot.

I dont think I ever used the mortars for anything except messing around, though. Never thought about just blowing everything to hell from a safe distance!

Let me start with - I enjoyed FC2. I played it on pc (they way fps are meant to be played.) I got the irking feeling that something major was missing from the game. It was definitely rushed and thrown on shelves. I still enjoyed being able to do whatever I wanted.

It's a great game, my only problem was it was a bit repetetive for it's length. Definately not a game I'd want to run through in a day/sitting, but a great game for playing on and off with for a few hours at a time.

Really, you felt it was 'rushed'? Seemed like a pretty solid game as far as quality goes. I think they just made poor design choices in some areas.

the only issue i have with far cry 2, the AI is stupid, many a time i was in the North railyard, on a mission, what would happen i would in the direct view of a guard, i would move back 5 paces and go around him, despite being in his radius of Personal space he didn't even say "we've got a live one here" however, FC2 is in my top 5 games, (1.L4D 2. COD4 3. FC2 4.GOW2 5.Guitar hero Greatest hits)

Decent but too many annoying flaws- having to drive around all the time, constantly being hunted and shot at when driving around, clearing a checkpoint of enemies only to have them respawn a few seconds later, the malaria thing, weapons degrading really quickly and basically being really repetitive.

or if you were very skilled with the mortar and an excellent judge of distance you could accomplish your mission from the next village (well maybe not that far, but it was quite a distance)

Well, as the other posters said, you could choose to go in guns blazing, go in stealthy, snipe, stealth snipe, bomb from a distance... sometimes even drop in with a hang glider. There were so many possible tactical approaches, made possible by the great terrain design. As to why stealth doesn't really work, I found three reasons: the first is the enemies instantly identify you even if they only saw your shadow and start attacking instead of investigating. The second is there's no use of light and shadows, the only way to hide is to get out of sight behind something. The third reason is you can't go prone, which makes stealth harder than it should. I hope the next game in the "series" (quote unquote since there's no connection between FarCry1 and 2) fixes these issues and adds online co-op while they're at it.

Few things that did my head in.

- All faction missions were "secret". In other words, programmers cba to make friendly AI.

- The checkpoints that you could scout counted how many you had cleared out, but whe you go back, people were there.

- Too much travelling.

- Bugger all main storyline, had to do pointless side missions until you could unlock a main mission.

- Driving sucked, that includes navigated with the map.

Few things that were great.

- Friking B-E-A-U-tiful.

- Lots of weapons.

- Fire looked insane.

- Firefights felt tense.

- BIG map.

- Online wasn't half bad.

- You can run over zebras and other animals.

- The buddy system works well.

- Running over zebras ffs! This is reason enough alone to buy the game!

@how the fire looked insane, yet it was good, but it doesnt last long, i expected massive fires from one molotov, but no, even with a field of dry grass fires last to a certain radius and then put themselves out
