I just got my 360 on Tuesday, and I'm having a bit of trouble with my wireless controllers. The one that came with the Xbox worked fine except the dpad didn't work in the 3oclock direction. I exchanged it for another one, and it's dpad worked perfectly, but the X, Y and B buttons did not respond at all. I exchanged *that* one for another new one and it suffers the same dpad problem as the first, although sometimes it registers and sometimes it doesn't.

I'm going to have to go back tomorrow and exchange this one and hope and pray I actually get one that works 100%. Am I just having incredibly bad luck, or are the wireless controllers known to be problematic??

Id say bad luck for the most part. Except for the D-pad issue. I have the same issue once in a while but really its the only thing wrong with the 360 controller. The D-pad just plain sucks. I hate it. IThe D-padis just not as acurate as some of the other consoles controllers.

Have 3 and not problems with it, Sounds like a round of bad luck. Try buying it from a different store.

I've went through two controllers with the d-pad problem and now the third one I picked up is okay. But if you can, just test the controller at the store before you take it home. Though there'd most likely have to be a 360 kiosk in the store in order for you to test it.

Ok, so the dpad thing seems to be fairly common then. I know most games don't use it and use the analog stick instead, but it's still really annoying that only about 50% of the presses on the rightside dpad direction actually register. And oddly enough, I've gotten the 3 controllers at 3 different stores hah. I think I'll try and have them test it before I go home with it today. Thanks for the help fellas.

On one of mine too but I would think that's our personnal care not the manufacturer. The D pad is a little sensitive but other than that I think they are pretty well made.

Wow, this is the first I've ever heard of faulty 360 controllers.  My d-pad left button used to stick because I spilt captain & coke on it, but it eventually quit sticking.  This is pretty bad luck since first party controllers across the board tend to be very reliable.  I own 5 that all work great (1 for PC).

I dpads are both pretty unresponsive, but I think it's the design. They need to redesign the dpad definately.

try to use broad band another time and then you can play using your controller and the wireless controller will work and thats just probably the fact that you didn't plug in your wireless controller in good enough and you can also call the micro soft tech support and send it in and they either fix your controller or they'll just give you a new one for free.

We'll it's funny that you mention this now because my second 360 controller actually has stopped working all together,it won't even turn on.

So i phoned microsoft up and they sent me a new one today,it only took 3 days to get here.

It's always worth a try.

After googling a bit, and finding the sandpaper fix that someone mentioned above, it looks like no amount of exchanging/returning will fix this dpad problem as it seems to be an actual design flaw. So I guess I should just learn to live with it then? That's kind of disappointing.

I've had teh same controllers since my first 360 and they are fine. One wired and one wireless, an I abuse the HELL out of hte wireless. It has taken more than one impromptu trip accross the room due to game-rage but still works like a champ.
