Fifa 11 fan trying desperately to enjoy my game. It seems impossible to pass defenders this year, and go on to score. I'm playing as a 3 star team in the Bundesliga, and moving past defenders to get close to goal to shoot is impossible for me. It can't simply be playing as a low quality team, as I have this problem with simiarly ranked teams. I'm playing on word class/legendary. Its not that i'm (that) terrible at the game (honestly), as I am a very proficient player in previous titles - Fifa 09 mostly. But this guy needs help, as I really want to enjoy the game, otherwise i'm gonna have to return it :(

The fact that there is a defence this time round is an improvement. The major flaw with the previous titles was the fact that you had no defence because a simple through ball would destroy you defence.

It makes the game more realistic, but if you ask me it was an update hated by fans and clearly not needed.

Its not as easy now to turn the defence, but a if you 'take a first touch' by moving the right stick in the direction you want to go can help take the ball through. I also play on top difficulty and sometimes its hard to get through.

Trying to guide the ball past players by knocking balls on by tapping the right stick in the direction you are moving gets you by sometimes.

The new Fifa 11 is actually pretty realistic and good. Here are some tips for those who need it.I have tried these on only PRO setting, so I cant guarantee they work on World Class or higher.

Passing a defender:

1.Speed of your player is really important. I cant stress enough how critical speed of your player is to be able to pass a defender. The easiest way to pass a defender is to run diagonally against him with NORMAL speed (means don't press the right trigger when running at defenders). Diagonally means NOT STRAIGHT at him but either to the left or right (depending on where the other defenders are in the gameplay context). So run towards the defender at a normal speed (HINT: you have a better control of the ball if not running at full speed) and at the right moment push the right stick (pushes the ball further away from you) diagonally (left or right) WHILE holding the right trigger to increase speed.

2. Remember left trigger allows you to keep the ball very close to your player so you can actually run past a defender with a clever player movement (holding left trigger go towards the defender's right and IMMEDIATELY switch your player direction to the defender's right). This way you USUALLY trick the defender that you will be making a run towards his left, he makes a challange (but since you have switched the direction of your player to his opposite side) but your player is running the other way.

3. Remember the golden combination to pass a defender: Right Stick to push the ball away from you and the defender, WHILE pressing and holding the right trigger to increase speed. Remember right stick (pointed to the direction you want your player to go, making sure there are no players at close proximity to intercept the ball, once pushed) and right trigger pressed/pushed at the same time.

Passing

1. A simple tap on the pass button passes the ball to the direction you point with your left stick to the NEAREST player. If you press and hold the pass button and then release, you will make a pass NOT to the nearest player in that direction, but to the player in the same lane, further away. So simple short passes = simple pass button taps.

2. Watch the Tutorial Videos - they are very informative....

Sorry for the long post, but there has helped me so hopefully they help whoever needs it...

My best advice would be (especially with a 3 star team) is to get the ball to your best midfielder and look for runs from your strikers (left button). Then play a lobbed pass or through ball and get into their box behind the defence. Works like a charm ;)

To the people sayin it makes the game more realistic, it doesn't really because the CPU's attacking completely sucks.

I feel the OP's pain. I'm a big Leeds United fan... trying to get through a defence on whatever the harest setting is just really sucks. Especially when the AI goes on the attack, one ball from ANYWHERE and they're 1-on-1 with my keeper. Seriously making me considering picking up PES11 instead.

Why dont you lower the difficulty setting. I mean, it is logical, if you are not used to the game yet (as i am not either) just try to work your way up the chain. Start winning on PRO, then World Class and then whatever was next. I mean, this is why they have all these difficulty levels after all. I think there is no shame to lower the difficulty level at all as you are getting used to the game.
