Hi, I'm new here =D

So I just moved into my first appartment and I miss the xbox 360 that stayed at home. I don't have a hd tv unfortunately, but I have a computer screen, its a dell E228WFP 22'' Widescreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor, It comes with a dvi and a vga input.

One of my friends works at a store that sells xbox360 and could get me a floor model for 350$ ca (premium version), thisis a "second gen" xbox he says and he's been playing dvds for a while in the store. If I buy this one I'd have to get a vga cable to hook it up to my monitor since it doesn't have a hdmi out.

Or I could geta xbox from walmart at 400$ ca (premium edition) and (assuming the xboxs that are coming out right now all have a hdmi out, so I've heard) hook it up to my monitor with a hdmi to dvi cable.

What do you guys think, I dont know a lot about this stuff and I need help to make a good decision.

Thanks

VGA is better, you can fine tune to resolution so that it meets with your monitors max resoltion. where as dvi you just select 720p 1080 i or 1080p, even if its not the optimal setting. And a first party vga cable is like 30.00 and its super high qualtiy

go on ebay you can get the vga cables for only £6 but be warned theys one thing to remember the lead has a male vga connector so ur monitor has to have a female vga socket where u connect the lead too. if the lead is moulded into the monitor with a male vga connector on the end of the leadand non removable then you need to buy a female coupler, all that is a double eneded connector with 2 female vga sockets on either side, only costs about £3. and this will mean u can connect it to ur monitors lead. as many monitors espielaly older ones dont have a socket they just have a male lead,

my lead im not sure if its a 3rd party lead but it works fine and looks same as the normal lead, but just came in a clear plastic bag rather than a box or a branded package. but in uk they are plenty of people selling them on ebay for around £6, mines worked perfectly for 3 months ive had my xbox and the graphics on my old 17" crt packard bell monitor are spot on at 1200 x 1024 (the 1200 aint right thats just routhly what the res is as i cant remember exaclty.) and they are even more bigger resoloutiuons you can get to on better monitors, sure the last one was at 1900 odd x sumit . well worth the money if u cant get a hdtv. and when the monitors close up to you then u can see all the detaills really well, looks miles better than my standard tv

dont listen to him he doesnt even know what hes talking about

Okay to start you can use either DVI or VGA, in all honesty the difference between them is nill. DVI works the same way as VGA allowing you to choose any resolution(what he calls fine tuning) the only thing is MCSOFT only supplies 360 to vga cables, not 360 to dvi. However you can easily find HDMI to dvi cables that ould work with the 360. Either option will work well and u wont be disappointed with either

Kyusss:

I would recommend buying a new unit. Who knows how many hours that floor model has on it and if the warranty is transferable. The savings isn't all that much after all when you consider that.

Besides, the 360 premium now starts at around $350, new.

The system is sold as new so the warranty starts when I buy the system, I know its only been used to play game videos or movies, its never actually been played.

I would be saving 50$ the premium system has a retail price of 400$ (covering the first party vga cable)

knowing this is it still recommended to go with a new system?

According to IGN, this thing has high quality VGA signal output and does several other things for less than the price of the M$ VGA cable.

I use VGA cables for my HDTV and it looks pretty good. The colors get slightly faded for some reason though. As for the DVI, I really don't know about that. You definitely would not be disappointed with the VGA though. I got the monster cable VGA for the 360 on ebay cheaper than the microsoft brand one...

I don't know what the tax rate is where you live and I'm assuming that you are including the tax to come up with a total of $400.00. At $350 +tax it should be more like $380? You might still be able to get a vga cable or maybe a used one at Gamestop / ebGames. Anyways Microsoft's vga cable @ $39.99:

Personally, I would scrounge up the extra $50 'cause I'd know that it's not a second-hand unit (It's still out-of-the-box / used). I'm pretty picky about stuff like that so I can't really make a call for you. I'd rather pay that and have the peace of mind. If you're not too picky, then go for it.

Also, Best Buy employees get a pretty good discount so how much is he really helping you out?

I live in Canada and a xbox premium is 400$. I guess i could just say that I reallywant the hdmi output since I know there isnt one on the floor model. He's not really trying to help me out, he just mentioned that he has a floormodel availlable and that he could sell it for 350$

I guess I'll just go with a new unit... another question how can I make sure that the xbox I'm getting is one of the new ones... with the hdmi output?

It should say on the box. If you check out the above link there is a picture of the new 360 Premium w/HDMI. If you look closely you can see the manufacture date and perhaps can gather that units manufactured after that date (2007-07-04)have it. Good luck!

I just called my friend he says the xbox has been on display for 8 months, can it somehow harm the system to be running at least 6 hours a day everyday?
