I'd like to know how much of a difference the HD DVD player for the 360 makes when watching DVDs. I recently got a 61" Samsung HDTV and I'm an avid movie watcher so I'm wondering if this thing is for me. I'd like your opinions before I drop $200 or whatever it is.

if u just gonna watch DVDs, then u dont really need the Hd Dvd player right? coz the 360 upconverts from the get go anyway, so i dont know what more can be done for dvds, maybe its time to pony up for HD Dvds instead so u can make the most of your massive tv

I do, and i have a very similar setup as you do. HD-DVD's are so much better than DVD's. The sound, the picture, it is all just so much better, and at $200 instead of whatever a normal HD-DVD player costs, it is a pretty good deal.

I've got it.

Some HD-DVD's look better than others. Google "tier system for HD-DVD" and you should find some forum posts that put the movies in order of picture and sound quality. The best looking HD-DVD's I've got are King Kong and The Matrix Trilogy.

Honestly, you'd probably be better off looking at a Blu-Ray player or PS3. I have both & Blu-Ray kills HD-DVD.

Yes, and the 360 is an aweful DVD player no matter how much it scales, yet the PS3 does it not just well, but VERY well.

Picture quality wise, HD-DVD is great. Movie selection wise, it kinda blows. I have the add-on and I do enjoy watching the occasional HD-DVD on it (I usually rent). I own Planet Earth which is absolutely fantastic picture quality and really shows off HD-DVD. But beyond that, there just isn't much of a library.

I admit I have Blu-ray envy -- if M$ made a Blu-Ray add-on, I'd buy it and have both formats. I'n not gonna spend over $500 to have a Blu-ray. I'll wait for the price to drop before going multi-platform.

My heart sank a little when Blockbuster hastily announced that they'll only support Blu-ray. They were my main source for HD-DVD stuff. So if you rent, you'll need to look to alternatives like Netflix or whatever. But if you like the current HD-DVD selection and you plan to buy instead of rent, then HD-DVD is definitely worth it for picture quality - on a 60" screen it is much MUCH better than standard DVD.

For the record, Blockbuster online will continue to send HD-DVD's online. They said that none of their stores that don't already carry them would only carry blu-ray. While its a blow, its not the death of HD-DVD.

As said earlier some HD-DVD's look better than others. Some of the older movies don't look all that great but for the most part any new movie will look great. The quality is better than HDTV that your getting from your cable or satelite provider.

OKOK I have a 61 Inch Sony Tv only does 1080i but still kicks a$$! I love the HD-DVD Movies! If you invest in Bose(own that too, there really good IMO) You want sound and quality. Now dont worry about the Blueray and HD-DVD Hype. I find that the month of july only has 1 blu-ray coming out while HD has at least 7. So I bought the player when it came out. Just recently got planet earth. It makes my TV show off what it does best!

WELL IF YOU HAVE EXTRA MONEY LIKE SAY 700 GET THE PS3..IF YOU HAVE ONLY 200 GET THE ADD-ON

I myself own both. Both are worth the money.

This is a no brainer, HD DVD looks outstanding on big HD TV`s. They got a lot of good titles allready out so theres plenty to choose from. If your a movie lover like me HD DVD is the perfect choice, Universal got so many great movies.

i don't know if i would buy it. wait out the format war for a few more months and see if bluray takes a larger lead than it already has. cause the movie selection for bluray is way better. cause i wouldnt want to drop $200 on a losing format right now.

im not try to be all fanboyish, just an educated opinion.and dont get all offended cause i mentioned to get bluray. it's better, you know it, suck it up.

You may want to do some real indepth research on this because as of now just about all the main movie studios exept one does not support HD DVD. Actually the PS3 does an awsome job of upscaling the older DVD's and the Blue-Ray movie titles are growing in a huge way. There has actually been rumors of game developers wanting to put there games on the 50 gig Blue-Ray disc now. Just something to think about for what is happening in the media wars.

I have the add-on and a ps3, and rarely use the HD-DVD player at all. I almost regret buying it. It isn't a bad product, but the last exclusive movie I watched was Children of Men. Other then that almost everything else is available on BD. When one company monopolizes the market it's to be expected.

I have the 360 add-on and a PS3. The only difference I ever notice is when I watch movies with uncompressed sound on Blu Ray everything sounds more crisp and clear. In terms of visuals, they both usually use the same codec now and thus the picture quality is no better, but BR discs that have an option to use uncompressed audio get the edge. I have my 360 through VGA and the PS3 through HDMI. My 5.1 surround is ran optical and my TV is a Samsung S5687 1080p DLP.

So it basically comes down to your movie preferences. Maybe you can highdefdigest.com and read what is out and what will be coming on for both to help aid your decision. Online renting is the way to go as well.

It's nice, I've got a 65 samsung, and suround. Matrix trilogy is great, also The Departed is on HD-DVD aswell. So far my collection is those plus, king kong (free w/ player), Full Metal Jacket, Children of Men and Sparticus. All are awsome in HD, and besides the quality the thing I like the most is the menu browsing.

The movies do look better, but not $200 better. But the HDDVDs themselves are nice, there just aren't enough of them, Blockbuster wont ever carry them, and if you do find one you like, it will cost you. So I'd only get one if money is no object, which judging by your TV, it isn't.

optical can only do 2.0 uncompress PCM, need the audio hooked up via HDMI into an HDMI capable receiver to get uncompressed 5.1 PCM.

I also have both and i feel that the options on the hd dvd is better but dru is right library wise br rules but lets remeber the beta vs vhs. It was all in the porno so give it a while. oh ya and this war i feel will die in a few years with a general dvd player which has come out that plays both. But now onto the real question hd dvd is great you will  really notice the picture quality ddifference automatically. You will realize the huge difference if you play a hd dvd and watch a regular dvd. There is absolutley nothing to complain about except the library selection. Oh ya and me personnally i bought the hdvd for one reason fast and furious series and matrix

Cool. My receiver must override my audio selection in movies to 5.1. I just assumed because BR titles usually sound so good it was doing something when I selected that audio option from the discs menu. Or it is in my head, but I'm convinced that with my set up the BR movies I've watched sound slightly better than my HD-DVDs. Maybe I've subconciously convinced myself of that to help justify owning both or something. Either way, I stick with that excuse (andDisney exclusivity)when my girlfriend gives me crap about owning both.

If you're going to buy a media player, buy a BD player. It won't be a dead format in less than a year. BD currently has more releases in one month than HD-DVD gets in a year.

Bose surround systems are complete garbage. Absolutle pieces of trash. There is a saying that anyone whos really into Home Theatre equipment, and not just looking at the price tag thinking it must be good. It is the following.

"No highs, no lows.............must be Bose"

It's S**T take it back while you still can and get a Paradigm speakers systems, with a minimum Denon amp.
