extra stuff... so it really is just optional? not required? coz' if it's not im gonna buy the arcade version.aoshi_shinumori
If you're getting XBL, it's a must-have.

If you're planning on buying any XBLA games, you pretty much need a hard drive. The Arcade pack is basically for people who want an HD-capable gaming system but won't get many games for it.
can i install 360 games on the 360? through the hard drive? like a pc? coz i dnt want to kill the optical drive early.
Certain games require a hard drive. I believe GTA IV is one of them, though I could be mistaken. Oblivion requires a HDD as well. Other posters were right, to DL content and to use any of XBL services you need a HDD.GSU28
Oblivion does not require a hard drive. It caches to it, but you don't need it.
To answer the OP, no, you can't install games on the HDD like on a PC. You always need the disc. Having an HDD speeds up loading times for games that cache to it (like Oblivion) so is useful in that regard. Mostly the HDD is for storing game saves and stuff like demos, downloadable content and videos from the Marketplace.
In my opinion an HDD is necessary to really make the most of your 360. In fact, I'm thinking about upgrading mine from 20 GB to 120 GB. If I was buying a 360 now (I got mine soon after launch) I'd get the Elite from day one.

if you connect to xbox live without a hard drive your 360 (not gamertag) gets banned from xbox live because they think you are a modder

What the hell makes you think that. You are saying that you cannot use a memory card to have a gold account on? That is dumb. There would be no point in the memory card if that was the case. You can still get on live with a arcade console so you don't know what you are talking about I think.
so if you guys recommend an HDD. what size? 20? or 120? coz' the diffrence is so big. i mean it's not like the ps3 that has 20,40,60,80 HDD. no midrange hard drive for 360.aoshi_shinumori
if u got the money, then of course go for the 120. im not complaining about my 20gb tho.
if u got 120 gb, u wont ever have to worry bout storing too much stuff.
20 gb is enough if you delete your demos when your doen with it and your not downloading any movies. So if your in Europe (like me) then there isnt even such a service so 20gb is just fine. I always have 8gb free and I keep all my saves, downloadable content and other game related content. You can also redownload purchased stuff for free since Microosft remembers what you alreayd purchased so even if you got no memory left then you can just delete DLC from games youve stopped playing and redownload them later on. Also 20gb is actually 14gb since the 360 uses 6gb for itself, but youll actually get benefit from this in games like Oblivion.
I would recomment the 20gb unless your filty rich or watch a lot of downloaded movies (which arent free btw).
