Frankie announced that he is leaving Bungie to "work more closely with Microsoft on the Halo franchise." He's saying that the reason he is leaving is to work more closely on future Halo games. This means that Bungie is moving away from developing Halo games. Bungie is moving on to make non Halo related games, while Microsoft will continue to breath like into the franchise. The legendary developer is moving on, and Microsoft is taking over.
At least some good news did come out of the update, 2 new maps are in the making for Halo 3 called "Purple Reign and Moonbase Alpha." We will eagerly be awaiting their release, and will probably be the last downloadable content for Halo 3. EVER! Savor the game, appreciate all that it is, for there will never be another game like it. A legendary ending to a mythical franchise.

Like many people you are taking things way out of context. First of all Bungie never claimed that Moon Base Alpha and Purple Reign are the last maps. Second, they never said that they will stop working with the Halo franchise. That's like saying that Valve doesn't care about the Half-Life franchise. Yes it is true that they will not be as involved in future Halo games as closely as they use to be, but they will still have a lot to say about something they orignally created; primarily the storyline considering the Halo Story Bible belongs to Bungie. It is true that Microsoft is assembling a team for future Halo games and it is true that Bungie is working on something that is totally unrelated to Halo (not marathon).
It's sad that Frankie left Bungie to work with Microsoft on Future Halo games. However, perhaps he can prevent Microsoft from tainting Halo into somethign really awful.
