I honestly don't think that paying for Live is that big a deal. It's not like I have piles of money to throw around, but $50 a year for everything you can do on Live is not that big of a deal to me. You're paying a little more than $4 a month for it. Consider the money you throw down on games and even the electricity you run while playing. What's another 4 bucks? That's one less burger for the month.
I think you have 'Free from now on' confused with the ad on my dashboard that says "Free Live Weekend from 10/31/08 - 11/03/08". Sponsored by EA and Gillette... It won't ever really go free. Xlive is pure milk they won't ever give for free.
There are occasionally free weekends to try and tempt silver members into buying gold. Regular gold members won't get any extra bonus - just more people playing games on Live. I hadn't heard about anything for this weekend, but it's happened before, so happening again isn't a huge surprise
I'd like that to be true, but I bet that it isn't. In any case, I just got my 12-month subscription (via a website retailer, for 40 bucks. Researching ftw), so it doesn't appeal to me that much.
