This might be a stupid question, but I heard that when you sign up for a live account, you get a month free of online gold even if you didn't pay for it. Is this true?

Yes, pick your gamertag, fill out info, select silver membership. It will then ask if you want gold, so deny the gold and then it will go to a free gold trial page.
