i have a widescreen hdtv and when i play games it's full screen, but when i try to watch movies with my 360 it just plays like it was a regular tv, and the sides of the screen are black, even if it's a widescreen dvd.

can anybody help me out?

Go to the system blade on the dashboard, then console settings, then display, and change the setting from 'Normal' to 'Widescreen'.
