I think Gears of War is a great game to get right off the bat, because it really gives you a good idea of what a really nice looking game looks like on the 360. However, if you are getting Live i would say Halo 3, simply because the online experiance on that game is unmatched.

Gears of War is a very fun game, but it's multiplayer is not the greatest.

If you're the kind of person who wants a single player game that lasts for a very long time, you could probably pick up Oblivion for pretty cheap, it has it's flaws though. Really though the only one who can answer this question is you, you should take a look at some reveiws on the site here and decide for yourself.

Actually, COD4 also has very good mulitplayer. I've never played it, but from the sounds of it it matchs Halo 3s mulitplayer with flying colours.
