I think the 8.5 was a little generous. I'd probably give it a 7.5 to 8.0
Decent game though. I just wish the side missions weren't so tedious and redundant. I'd rather they eliminated some of the generic wasteland planets for a few extra developed areas actually fun/interesting to explore. I also can't give it full marks for graphics and collision, because I've been stuck frozen in place a few times, and I've noticed there is a 2-3 second delay for the textures to fill themselves in. Gets an A+ for story and voice work though, and the controlls are fluid.
I'd say it was fair. I gave it a 9.5 because I loved the ending. But an 8.5 seems fair to me also, considering the tech problems, limited explorable planets, a lot of areas were identical (bunkers, mines, labs, ect.), and the broken squad control system.
I though everything else was done beautifully that includes the Mako. I didn't think the controls for the Mako was any different than the Mongooses in Halo 3, but a lot of people didn't like them.
no. they took of points for the few technical problems, but the gameplay, story, and visuals completely outwiegh them. The game is not deserving of a perfect score because of those problems, but its probably my favorite game this generation.

^Kinda weird you should use the phrase "Not great" because if you look at the Mass Effect review, you'll see the word "Great" right next to the 8.5.darkmoney52
True BUT, editor's choice is what this game should have gotten. 9 or 9.5. How does Assasin Creed get a 9? I played it once. Beat it. Never gonna touch it again. Mass effect I beat 4 times and plan on beating it another 2 more times! You telling me that doesn't get an "editor's choice"? PAWLEEZ

yer that must be the only reason for the score anywhere below 9 lol.
I would probably give it the same score but not for the same reasons.I thought that the side quest planets were way too repetitive. You were basically storming the same buildings over and over again. That was really only aspect of the game that i didnt like but i spent alot of time on side quest.
Just look at the user review compared to thier review of the game. They obviously missed the marker when reviewing the game. The fact that the user reviews are more then .5 higher then the original review supports thisacesion
I disagree. Just because the user rating is higher than the reviewer's rating doesn't mean the review was wrong. Many times its because the reviewer was objective, and that can't compensate for the 10's a game gets from fanboy types who like to pretend all thier favorite games "are perfect" even when they have major flaws.
I'm not trying to bash on "Mass Effect", I own and play the game, and I like it alot. That said, its a fact that the game has several bugs/glitches, the texture mapping is poor, and the side quests and planets are rather barren, repetative and bland in many stretches, and if you're reviewing the game objectively, you can't just ignore those flaws no matter how well the game's other aspects are done.
I agree with some of the criticism although i only had one frame rate problem (it was HUGE tho) but regarding the score if they can give Assassins creed 9.0 the Mass effect shout have got a perfect score
Yeah but hitting the game because its doing more then your typical RPG I think sucks. ME is the best looking game on 360 and because of that it has dips in FPS and pop in's every now and then. Most games dont even offer sidequests but this at least gives you some stuff to do extra. Granted its a bit short but its at least as long as Bioshock was if you dont do any of the side quests.
Here is the question I have if GTAIV comes out with FPS and poping problems like in the gameplay previews do you think it will get an 8.5 or lower, or will the overlook it simply because its GTA???
Also as far as the "fanboy 10's" you also need to factor the Fanboy 0's the game gets because PS3 fanboys want to blast the game because its not on PS3.
I just picked up Mass Effect last night and started playing not too long ago. I'd say I'm about an hour into the game at the moment. So far I've all ready seen so many amazing things. The visuals are just stunning! You cannot deny that. The voice acting is superb and the way it blends action and role-playing together is just great.
That being said, I've come across quite a few issues, mainly just visual issues and the occasional bug. Honestly though, this isn't one of BioWare's best. Of course it's an amazing game all Xbox 360 owners should at least rent but compared with the other wonderful games BioWare has produced, I think the 8.5 was just right.
