I asked for a used copy of dead island non goty, and he gave me a sealed copy and said something about a policy. When I left i noticed the bottom of the case was smashed, but I opened it anyways and the green plastic bits fell apart. Can I still return the game? I'm thinking they wouldn't sell it on the shelves as new because of the defect, but maybe now I don't have proof of the new game being used if I want a full refund. My receipt doesn't say Dead island USED (should it have).

Don't you mean Gamestop sold a used copy as new? Gamestop has been doing this for awhile now. Between the experiences I've had, and other people have had with some of their policies, I try to avoid shopping there at all cost...

No the game was shrink wrapped and still had it's seal. the bottom of the case was smashed. And the game disc is in perfect condition. I think they gave me a new copy because of the defect because they wouldn't sell it new, which is better than used but I don't know if I can get a refund.

I don't buy from them anymore. Once I ordered a new game, paid the full price and it came pre-owned. It came sealed but the game was brutally used. It was scratched all over and you can see the dics was cleaned in an attempt to make it look 'new'.

Recap: you went to buy the game used and for the same price they gave you a new copy instead. The disc is in perfect condition. Yet you want a refund bcause... the condition of the DVD case is not to your liking?

Is there something I'm missing here?

The case does not determine if the game was new or used. DVDs, games, etc, all have damaged cases from time to time. Whatever condition is listed on the receipt is what return policy you're bound to.

Stuff like this is why I almost exclusively use Amazon now, until I have a bad experience I guess. its pretty awesome when you have Prime too. Last time I went to GameStop I bought a new copy of Halo Reach. It was still in factory sealed but it looked like someone tossed it across the parking lot and let it slide all over the concrete. Even when I unwrapped it the case was scratched pretty significantly on the front. I've not bought a game at GameStop since and plan to never buy another game there again if I absolutely don't have to.

Yeah. I use Amazon for most of my games now. Haven't encountered any problems with them. I also use ebay, but only from trusted suppliers with very high customer rating.

Yea, last time I went to GameStop, I traded in a lot of games and actually got some decent money back for them. I purchased 3-4 used games with that credit and by the time I got in the car, I looked in my Yakuza 4 case and it was actually Yakuza 3 in it. Went back in to the store and embarrassed the guy working there. Pissed me off though good thing I looked in my game cases.

Gamestop really isn't that bad... it's the same as any other retailer if you ask me.

Sometimes the used game deals are pretty good. Just don't trade in... obviously the trade values are low.

Important note: If you buy a used game, you have 7 days to try it, and you can return it. It's a part of the policy. Even if you beat it, you can just return it. Thats a great perk.

I once exchanged a game at Target because I didn't like the condition of the case. >_>
