the only problem with the a button is that when you are sprinting, and you are close to a object then you take cover against it when you don't want to, and so it really slows you down.
I think it was pretty brilliantly handled. I made the mistake of playing Halo 3 right after Gears, and the lack of a cover system made it seem utterly devoid of tension.
