Do any of you're friends have either. I'd say go with the ones your friends play. They're both good. I'd say Gears 2 is less glitchy but It's got a steeper learning curve for multiplayer. There are alot of unorthodox tactics at play in the game compared to others. Gears 2 has a deeper multiplayer though and a better single player. But it's more expensive. I can't really recommend one over the other. Each has their own series of convenienaces and inconveniances. It depends on what you want most from them.
You need gears 1..... in gears 1 the lancer isnt amazing... in gears 1 the shotgun is amazing....in gears 1 sniping is better and if you are the competitive gamer you need gears 1 and still over 200,000 people play it monthly so all day youl be able to find a match and gears 1 is 19 bucks and gear2 is like 50 and with that price difference you can buy another game
speaking from a purely single player perspective, you should at least rent the first gears. the campaign isn't very long but it's a blast to do co-op. the second has a longer campaign, and its more recent than the first, and i'd assume the multiplayer would be better, though i've heard compared to the first the matchmaking is a mess.
gears 2 is garbage compared to the original... the only reason I play gears 2 is because of the guardian game mode, other than that gears 1 is amazing. the shotgun actually works and I dont have to deal with getting matched up with mexicans every other game.

Gears 2 has the better campaign and it has horde mode. I never really played either online much so can't give an opinion there. I'd say Gears 2 > Gears 1.
If you're only buying one get gears of war 2, but if you do buy both don't even start playing gears of war 2 til you finish gears of war 1, because IMO you'll probably never go back to gear 1 after you've played the second one (that's what happened to me)
