sorry i have so many questions in the forum about 360, but none are the same, just looking into my options in a 360 before buying one. if i bought one it would mainly be for online play, so i want to make sure that is doable. i play pc games in my house just fine, usually 40-100 ping, higher if someone is downloading a lot of stuff. i live in a house with 16 people, 2 dsl routers, and a lot of routers between different people.

1- is this going to be a huge problem in setting up xbox live? for my computer i just put in the ethernet cord and it worked, but for xbox live, is there going to be a bunch of trouble? i think my cord goes to a router that goes to another router that goes into a dsl modem thing.

2- also, having dsl, will that be playable on xbox live? will it slow down other peoples internet in the house?

thanks for the help

Plug the 360 into the router just like you did with your computer. You shouldn't have any issues. Though hosting a match may be a bit laggy, but you should be ok.

You're gonna want to hook your 360 up to the modem in your house that actually recieves the dsl. You can do it through 1 or more routers, but XBL is particular about NAT. Im not sayong you can't do it, it just may be more difficult, as you have to connect to a router and open NAT and ports possibly, and then follow that through anymore routers and to the actual modem continuing to open ports as you go.

As for dsl being okay, what is your up and down speed?

Older/cheaper dsl service is still256K, you couldn't go onto live with that. But newer dsl is very close to high speed cable, and its okay. I have dsl with 2500Kb/s down and 512Kb/s up, definately not as fast as high speed cable, but more than enough to play on live.

how would i check my speeds? i know theres a website and a cmd command, what is it/they to do this, and if i post it could you tell me if thats good or bad?

also, i dont think i can just plug it into my modem, no room left, being 15 people in this house. it might have to go thru 2 routers i would think, i would just take the ethernet cord in my pc and switch it over to my 360, will they be able to be changed back and forth like that? even if it is hard to get it working ,is it def doable?

Go here to get your up and down speed: http://www.speedtest.net/

Yes, it's definately do-able, I was just warning you as some people don't have a lot of knowhow in networking, if terms like NAT and port forwarding don't bother you, then you are just fine :)

i dont know those terms...but i think i could play around with stuff, is forwarding a port going into the server, and opening the port? ive done that before for my computer, i would use the same cord for the 360

I'm not much of a tech nerd, but I'm guessin that means if you DL somethin from Marketplace it would download at 716 KB/S a minute

Look into something called "QoS." It means Quality of Service, and if you're lucky your router(s) might have that option. It allows you to prioritize traffic so downloads don't affect your gaming.

also, besides answering these 2 questions, i have a 3rd one,

what is everything i need to check, etc. to make sure i can get live working before i go all out and buy a 360? what server and router settings do i need to check or be able to know how to change? or will it be as easy as just plugging it in since its already being used by my computer?

I'm not much of a tech nerd, but I'm guessin that means if you DL somethin from Marketplace it would download at 716 KB/S a minute

You divide the speed you see by 8, So 716/8 would be 89 KB/sec

For example mine

Would be 1338/KB sec or 1.38 MB/sec

But about the thread, as long as you don't have any nat issues have over 256kbps /256kbps up Xbox Live will run fine.

Read that if you need more info.

With port forwarding, access the modem/router by connecting to 192.168.0.1 (by default) on a pc connected directly to the modem/router. There will be a section in the modem/router setup to forward ports, the xbox live ports are, UDP 88,
UDP 3074, TCP 3074.
Do this on any other routers that are wired between the main modem/router and the 360 you will be using. You don't necessarily have to do this, only if you are having NAT problems.

About your other questions, you need to meet at least a 256Kb/s up and down requirement for live. Your upload is about half what you need, this is not good. Only thing I can think, try to do a speed test with no one else using your household internet connection, this will allow you to see ALL of your available bandwidth, you may very well have higher numbers than 700/120.

And if you do only have that bandwidth (700/120) then you most certainly will cause your roomates lag, as you XBL will be using all of your household upload and half the available down bandwidth.

if i do have to do this, what will i do, simple as disable and enable or do i just type my ip in the blank next to each of those 3 ports you listed? and will this defualt ip bring up all routers? or is that a hard part?

I edited my post to address all 3 of your current issues, and yes, port forwarding is as simple as typing the ports, choosing UDP or TCP and giving your 360 a static ip, so the ports will always be open.
