Gold membership question

Hi there. I got a card for a 12 month gold membership today, and had a few questions. You see, I already had a silver membership, but it was for some reason a seperate profile. I'm worried that when I enter the code for my gold membership that it will create a third gamertag on my system. You see, I had my gamertag, but a while later I got an ethernetcable, and attempted to connect to xbox live. To do this I was required to make a new gamertag.

So, is there anyway to take my existing gamertag and upgrade it to gold rather than just having a new profile with gold membership? I'd rather not have a new tag, and would like it to be on my profile that has all of my saved games and achievements.

Just redeem the gold live code on your preferred tag and it will upgrade that tag

When that tag connects to the internet, it's only going to change because the name is already taken. It doesn't actually create a new account, it just takes the one you have and gives it a new name of your choosing. Even when you do that, the first 3 tags on that system that connect online get a free month of live.
