I prefer great gameplay. I wil admit that I don't pay as much attention to the storys. In my opinion Why would someone want a better story? A game is for playing. If you want a good story go read a book. A great story is just a good bonus.

Well actually a great story is one of the reasons why the Final Fantasy Series has been amazing over and over again because think about it. Its the same RPG Elements used over and over again but what stands out in the game is its unique story and characters, etc.

Think of Oblivion, no story, some of the best gameplay though.

I think both are equally important components of a game, however, usually one is sacrificed in light of the other. For example, in Gears 1, the gameplay was made top priority, but it failed at story. In Final Fantasy or any other standard RPG, the story usually gets you more excited than how well done the combat is. There is the rare occassion, however, where both components are strong, such as in Fallout 3 and The Legend of Zelda titles. My personal preference cannot be said, because I don't have one. I enjoy FPSs and RPGs equally, which pretty much sums it up: I don't care as long as one of the two said elements of a game are good. Having both is a quite a bonus indeed.

I have to say gameplay is more important because without great gameplay there is basically no point of playing. Story is still a key element to a story driven game but some times it isn't necessary like in sport or multiplayer driven games.

I slightly prefer gameplay. However, if it's an RPG, story is equally important to gameplay. Otherwise, gameplay is more important.

Gameplay is the most important, but I'll be willing to go through a mediocre game if the story interests me (Assassins Creed for example)

Lets see.. Gameplay= game mechanics + graphics + other tech related stuff. Story= a script on which the whole game is based from start to end. U see its not like gameplay over story or vice versa in games.. Its abt the chemistry of both that makes memmorable titles that u come to love and respect in the long run.. A good story in a game has never failed to impress me and i love it when a games has a solid story script.. IMO it is the most effective way to tell a story (ie with a game) as a good story in a game always touches the gamers heart may be because of the immersion and relations u develop with ur charechters. I do realise the fact that game is not only the most effective medium but also the most difficult one when it comes to story telling.. But i beleive that better story telling in games can do miracles to the gaming industry..

I used to be really big on story, I would go out of my way, to play a bad rpg just for the story aspects. However, now I've been gravitating more toward gameplay, especially in this generation. I think possibly because RPGs maybe have just to much stuff going on nowadays.

Gameplay > Story

A game could have one of the most epic stories ever, but if the gameplay is terrible I won't rough it out for the ending. As previously said, the FF series has been gaining popularity over the years purely for the story of the game. But they had to reach certain gameplay requirements before they can cruise through practically on story alone. Which is why many FFs are similar in the way they play. They feel good and even, as they always have. Then it's up to the story to properly deliver.

Hard to say. I count the execution of the story and voice acting as part of the story. The gameplay in most JRPGs isn't really all the great, but the stories and character make up for it. The "story" in most other genres usually ranges from mediocre to crap, but the gameplay is decent enough. I think that the best games always find a way to mix a good story with good gameplay and the titles that everyone will forget about in 8 months usually went the "either, or" route.

I guess i'd choose Gameplay > Story if the only options were, Great Gameplay + Horrible Story or Horrible Gameplay + Great Story. But thats a pretty extreme case.

gameplay over story, as game play involves online play too :)

Would it be too much to ask for both?

i prefer gameplay over story. a game with a good gameplay can be fun even without a good story, for example, gears 1, but a game with good story wont necessarily be fun if the gameplay sucks. but certain games proves that story can make the game fun, for example, mass effect. the gameplay of mass effect was only ok, but the story is so great that it's fun to play the campaign many times. on the other hand, assassin's creed is an example of a game with great story but it's fun factor is reduced due to repetitive gameplay, which is a proof that games with good story wont necessarily be fun without a good gameplay.

Well since this thread was somewhat of a byproduct of a conversation I've had with Mimic I thought I better chime in with my 2 cents.

A game can still be entertaining without a story but not without good gameplay, that's pretty much fact. I don't think story is more important than gameplay. The point I was making is that to be a truly great game the majority of time developers have to strike a balance between both gameplay and story (as many of you fine people have already pointed out). It was in response to a comment Mimic made stating "Who needs story when you have gameplay?"

Story isn't the MOST important aspect of game devlopment but it's still an important aspect.

Oh and this conversation was in reference to single player campaign games rather than Wii mini games or Online Multiplayers (CS, DOD, TF2 etc).

A great story can make the gameplay better. But great gameplay won't really effect the story too much. That being said, I would rather have a great story in a game, but gameplay is always important too.

they aren't interchangeable for me, I mean a game can be good with only great gameplay or a great story, but it wouldn't be great without both.
