ou know ive actually been having a similiar problem while playing GTA. My console doesnt freeze but GTA pauses/freezes for about a 2 second window every 30 seconds or so. But then game play goes back to normal. It hasnt happend the last 24 hours or so. and it doesnt happen with any other game. Sooo i would try playing with other games if the problem persists its your 360. If not then you have a similiar problem to me. Which if anyone can please give sopme insight on the darn thing freezing every 30 seconds. I doubt its my 360 as i just got it back from MS a week ago. And has no other problems. Now im realliy leaning towards the Elite...
Freezing leads to RROD. Because the chip inside your xbox has overheated to a point the the filling on the top of the chip (That keeps it cool) isn't keepn it cool anymore... so matter how long you let your xbox 360 rest or try and cool it off it will always freeze.
I have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM, I also did the towel trick the week before because of the RROD. You have to download a patch for GTA off of Live. Then if that doesn't work or it freezes up again do the towel trick for 20 minutes.
The game will start freezing up again in about 2 days but just do the towel trick again.
I've only had the freezing with GTA 4 so I don't think it's your 360
