i havent played it yet but every pic and vid ive seen shows me the worst graphics ive seen on the 360 so far! graphics dont make the game fun of course, but wow it looks ugly!

love how they mention a few problems, then go on to give it a 10.
"the AI has problem going through doors and following you.. but it's not that bad cause it's easy to replay mission."
"targeting is easy.. wait for their heads to pop up, then shoot." ? (isn't this a bad thing that most shooters get docked points for?)
i dunno, after reading the review, i was suprised it got a solid 10. i'm sure the game is great.. but that was a weird reveiw. kinda contradicted itself a few times.
the hype (and lack of other games) has got me though, and i'll probably pick it sometime soon.
You're right, graphics don't always make the game. And the graphics, which are much better than any previous GTA are not what merit the perfect 10 score. It's the pure scope of the game. The incredible attention to detail. The great story, the interesting characters. Here's a comment from IGN's 10 review. Grand Theft Auto III was a revolutionary title, one that inspired a whole new generation of 3D action games. Grand Theft Auto IV is just as big a leap forward, though perhaps in subtler ways, and sets a new benchmark for open-world games. Everything in GTA IV works in harmony. The story would be nothing without the city; the city gains realism from the physics engine; the physics complement the improved AI; the AI would make no sense without the new cover system. And on and on. There is no one major weak aspect. A "10" is not a score we give out very often. In fact, the last time we gave a 10 to a console game was Soul Calibur in 1999. A 10 doesn't mean a game is perfect -- it means a game is pushing boundaries, expanding a genre, and doing many things to a level so far above and beyond its competitors that they overshadows any flaws. Certainly, GTA IV has some issues, the most noticeable being the occasional flaw in the cover system, but there are many more pieces of GTA IV that are better than anything I've seen from a game in the past decade. We don't give 10s often -- just to games that merit the score.i havent played it yet but every pic and vid ive seen shows me the worst graphics ive seen on the 360 so far! graphics dont make the game fun of course, but wow it looks ugly!

Umm i have the game and i aint too impressed with the graphics. Night time there are realy good and sharp in the distance but during the day cycle the backgrounds look realy washed out and nasty. I guess it just takes some geting use to but the story and character personalitys are top notch and verry funny at times.
I guess I'm not surprised that there are people who question the score. People are always complaining that some of their favorites don't garner higher review scores. Now that a game comes along that gets that perfect score, people have a problem with that. But if a game gets this much positive feedback and critical acclaim despite some minor issues, I think that's worth some respect.msjr78
don't get me wrong, i have no problem with a game getting a 10. it's just the way the reveiw went, it didn't seem like it deserved it.
i've yet to play it, and i'll make my own assuption then. it's just their review was real weird, talking about stuff that most games get docked points for.. but then go on to give it a perfect score.
i look forward to playing it.. but really, what did it do that was so ground breaking it deserved a 10?

Halo 3 deserved it, me and the whole Halo community agrees, so stfu...love how they mention a few problems, then go on to give it a 10.

A ten is when a game is nearly perfect, but there are some miner problems. But since the game is so good, the good overshadows the bad.
my brother has it and i think its worth a 9 or a 9.5 at most. i think some money was inn the picture when the review was written!Man Rockstar must have a lot of money set aside for bribing video game reviewers because the game is getting perfect scores left and right. I love stupid conspiracy theories.

I always figured a 10 to be perfect. if it had minor flaws it'd be a 9.5. 10 is the best score possible.
I think the problem here is what a "perfect 10" means to people. Some people want that to be an unattainable pillar of perfection that is impossible to reach, others are willing to accept that as a mark of such high standard that it is rare, but attainable by the rare greats.
Does GTA have the greatest graphics ever? No, not at a purely superficial level. It looks good though (trust me, flaws show up pretty well on a 120" HD screen). The sheer scale on display at times is what really raise the graphics up though. People seem to miss a lot when they comment on "graphics"... they seem to believe the only true merit of that is photorealism. Is a photorealistic room running at 20fps as good an example of good graphics as a full blown living city that runs at a solid frame rate? I'd argue not.
I've always used attention to detail as a barometer of a game's quality when doing my research. If I hear about small details that are paid attention to, that usually means the developer really cares about what they are piecing together. In this case, the attention to detail is spectacular. I think my biggest Whoa moment was when I was driving around and my cell phone went off. You know that strange buzz you get in your car's speakers right before your cell phone rings? The game has that. It is to the point in this game that I'm usually surprised when something is a little less realistic or out of place because that is the deviation from the norm. That is a sign of good craftsmanship.... and this is coming from someone who really didn't have much of an interest in the previous games of the series.
Oblivion didn't even get a 10. I think there was something else involved.mohfrontline
That's because Oblivion is a FAR from perfect game. There are numerous GAME-ENDING BUGS in it. I started over twice and both times, about 40 hrs in, encountered a bug that prevented doors from being opened by switches. It was a known bug in both the PC and 360 versions on the forums at the time, but nothing was done about it for months. I eventually just gave up on the game. Any game that has flaws that large, game-breakers, doesn't deserve "perfection".

I posted the closing comments of the IGN review. The reviewer said that despite the minor issues that you would assume most games would be docked points for, the game does so many things so much better than any other game out there that those minor issues can be overlooked. I guess you'll just have to play it to understand what he's talking about.haha its quite funny that all you guys argue over why GTA 4 should or shouldnt have received a 10, when in all reality does it really matter what GS or any other game review site think of the game? GTA 4 is the kind of game that you will buy if you like the GTA franchise or you dont buy cuz you hate GTA. People who are going to buy this game will not have the judgement fogged by a game review site just becuase of the sheer reputation that GTA has. As with other games that you look for reviews before purchasing the game.
On another note I beleive this game does deserve a 10, the graphics are definately not the worst seen on the 360 whoever said that is just plain stupid. Characters are well thought out. Missions are fun and so is the online gameplay. This game is the total package.

Remember man! The m00n landing was fake and sh*t! Microsoft is, like, owned by the devil brah, don't buy their cr*p or you'll burn dude! Burning in hellz iz not very nar nar! Get an Apple, it'z so rad, I god da*m swear man! It is teh computer Jesus would've made if he was alive!
Anyway seriously, usually I don't care what the reviewers say, I only care if I like it or not, I just treat reviews as another video/text. preview
I don't believe this game is any where near perfect and giving it a 10 seems a bit too much to me, way too much hype and really it did not live up to it as far as I am concerned. The graphics are no where near the best seen on the 360, very blurry at times, especially things like shadows they look horrible in the game. Also Niko walks, runs, and just moves in general way too slow just the turning while running is pretty ridiculous. Not to mention driving in the game is absolutely horrid, sure I understand that different cars have different controls and I am fine with that but when has GTA ever been a real racer rather then an arcade racer? Seriously driving over 20 going around a corner almost almost leads to spinning and/or smashing into walls/cars/people or whatever. The shooting is subpar at best as I was expecting so much more with the aiming system though the AI responds greatly to where you shoot them ie arms/legs/chest/head not to much the slow factor in the game itself just seems a bit boring shooter rather then a fast action thiller that I expected.
All in all I will keep playing the game and give it more of a chance since I have put very little time in to the game so far but again this game is in no way a perfect 10 in my opinion and seems like a bit of a stretch for a gaming site like GS to give it that but it is GTA IV I suppose. As far as I see it right now this game doesn't even live up to Saint's Row....Saints Row 2 here I come!
Wow some of the people in here are stupid.
This game is AMAZING. How can you not play a game, but accuse gamespot of being paid off?? That is ridiculous!!!
There is nothing wrong with this game, the fact that the only complaint about the game is AI gets stuck in doors occasionally MERITS the 10.0
If you play a game for over 100 hours and the only thing you can find wrong is AI getting stuck in a door a few times, LMAO, BEST GAME EVER.
ive put in 15 hours already since midnight last night, and this game is by FAR already, the BEST game i have ever played. SHUT UP AND BUY IT.
i havent played it yet but every pic and vid ive seen shows me the worst graphics ive seen on the 360 so far! graphics dont make the game fun of course, but wow it looks ugly!

The graphics aren't totally brilliant in terms of textures, but the lighting is beyond belief, night time feels perfect and the cars are so shiny and detailed it's unbelieveable. They really put the delicious stuff in the detail, not in the overall shine. Only quip I have with animations so far is that Niko leans when he turns!
Im about 5 hours into it now. I must say this game is the same ol tired game. I was waiting and waiting for something to pop out and be like "WOW" but unfortunately it hasnt yet happened. Like GTA3 and on it follows the same formula. Cutscene, Mission repeat, with an occasional minigame. Lame attempt at GOTY and definitely a Payoff for the BIGGEST HYPED GAME THUSFAR.
Wow 15 hours since midnight that means you wouldn't of slept at all since getting it...WOW!
I think the better question is why weren't some of the other problems like the graining graphics mentioned in the review or the extremely repetitive nature of the game (which all games have and negatives for and are docked for in rating score) or the loading times and seemingly constant cutscenes during every mission? I think its just a bit extreme giving it a 10, again everyone is entitled to their own opinions on the reviews and everyone else's for that matter.
Since when has GTA EVER looked good? You play it for the gameplay, not for the graphics. And if no where near the ugliest game on the system. It's an amazing achievement that it looks so good considering how huge the game is.PlasmaBeam44Never has it looked great graphically but when coming to reviews graphics should play some part in getting a perfect score. Also like I said a couple posts above the gameplay is extremely sluggish, Niko walks/runs/sprints/turns/shoots slow and the driving is horrible, probably the thing I hate most about the game its easier to try to run away then drive away considering how hard turning/braking is in the game. With that said I don't see how this game mounted a perfect score but to each their own I suppose, usually GS is really picky about things like that and prevent games from getting perfect or near perfect scores because of it.

I've never really had much trouble driving in the GTA games. I can understand how some people could find it anoyying. I guess I'm used to it since I play a lot of driving sims like Forza and Gran Turismo.
