For a long time, Gamespot has held a policy in which no game is perfect and no game deserves an absolute perfect score. Gamespot has broken that rule with Grand Theft Auto 4. So I pose a question: Are the perfect scores for GTA IV a result of long built hype, or of actual substance?

I dont think it was because of hype...but i dont know why the reviewer actually gave the game a 10. If you watch the video review you see that he does point out a few things he didnt like about the game. By definition, then the game isnt a 10 because the things he mentioned as negatives are the kinds of things that generally lower other games scores even if only by a little.

This is the problem with Gamespots new rating system. Maybe the game deserves to be rated higher than halo 3, which got a 9.5. But under the new system, you cant rate it higher without giving it a 10. Maybe the game actually deserves a 9.6 - 9.9. But the new ratings system is overly simplified and and very limiting. So if you really want to set the game apart from other games that got 9.5 you have no where else to go but give it a 10 even though its not perfect.

IGN gave it a 10, but there is NOT ONE negative thing said about the game in the review.

To be honest. I think that the GameTrailers review was pretty on the spot. They gave it a 9.8 and rightly so. After playing the game for the whole day, I can tell you for a fact that at certain times I was getting bored.

A 10 does not equate to perfection.

Pretty much.

10.0: Prime This exceedingly rare score refers to a game that is as perfect as a game can aspire to be at its time of release. Obviously, the constantly changing standards for technology and gameplay will probably make this game obsolete some day, but at its time of release, a game earning this score could not have been improved upon in any meaningful way.

A 10 out of 10 does not equate perfection? Maybe not on Gamespot (due to the limting rating system), but '10 out of 10' literally means perfection.

I do NOT think it deserves a perfect 10. No game will deserve that because if it vcan be made like that, there can always be something better than it. It can always be improved. I think it deserves high, maybe 9.5. Or I guess it could go for a 10 for a while until something beats it and then it lowers, but GS doesn't do that kind of thing...so I think the review is screwed up.

eTrace- that is true. BUT, just look at those 2 games now...Do you think they are worth 10/10 now? I don't though they are great classics, if they came out today they would be crap. So will GTA 4 in a few years.

They've made exceptions before, check Tony Hawk 3 and some Zeldo games.

PLus a 10 means PRIME not perfect and they stil believe perfect doesnt excist.

Can I have your copy of the laws of the universe then? Perfect doesnt excist but a game should get credit for being the ultimate it can be.
